It's soda-pop.

All alone, soda is a contraction for sodium. And soda water is never called pop.

However, many dads are called pop, but they're certainly not called soda.

Actually its *Soda pop

But parts of the country have shortened it to either pop, soda, soft drink, or drink.

In Michigan we call it pop.

I've used both interchangeably. More "soda" since moving to the Midwest nearly 20 years ago.
