I have a visitor visa as well as a student visa - the student one expires soon. Do I have to go out of UK and enter again on my visit visa or can I carry on and stay on my visit visa?

Thanks for your answers .. I'm not studying anymore but plan to stay a bit longer on visit visa which is valid for another few years.

When I switched from the same visit visa to student status I had to go back to my country and get student visa from there!

For Mr Curious: I have a visit visa for 5 years which allows me to visit here and stay upto six months at a time. I'm not studying anymore so can't (and don't want to) renew student visa.

The question is simply whether my status automatically gets changed from student to visitor at the end of my student visa or do I have to exit before the student one expires and re-enter UK as a visitor(to stay no more than 6 months of course)

A visit visa cannot be valid for a few years. A visitors visa can only be valid for 6 months maximum, so if you plan on staying in the UK for more than 6 months on a visitors visa, then you will be here illegally. I am a UK immigration officer and I know this for a fact. If your still a student with a valid students visa, then this can be renewed.

As long as you have a valid visa, you don't have to leave the UK.

Logic tells me that if you are still studying, you can renew the student Visa. Check out http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk for further Visa info.

No you don't..you must do it one month before the expiration date, you must renew it if you are studying still and its wise to renew your student visa. No you don't leave..why should you? Make sure you renew your visitor's visa also one month before it expires..
