I have eight year old twins who I would love to take to a haunted house, but I don't want it to give them nightmares. I can't remember how old I was when I first went to a haunted house. The kids would love to go, but I don't know if they are really ready to. What do you think?

it depends on the child,,, my grand daughter is 4 and loves them so its hard to say,, explain to the kids that it is just a costume and that they will not hurt you,, they might chase you but they will never harm you it is a game that they are playing,, and she was great with it,,

I think you should go by yourself at first. Preview it, so to speak, just as you might a movie you weren't sure about. If you can't do that, see if you can find someone who's been through that huanted house. If you think your children can handle it, and would enjoy the experience, go for it. If not, tell them you prefer to wait until they are a little older, or find a less "haunted" house (a lot of fire stations, scout groups, etc put on haunted houses that are more "family friendly").
I was much braver than my sister, riding roller coasters, doing haunted houses, etc. when I was six or so. I don't think she went on a roller coaster in her entire life. What's appropriate for one child may not be appropriate for another until they're older. Use your judgment.

I just recently took my children to a haunted hayride. On a hayride they do not have to walk through it so I figured if they got scared they could hide their heads in my lap. All 3 of them wanted to go so it wasn't like I made them go either. It really depends on the child of when they are old enough to go. My 4 year old loved it and watched every bit of it but my 5 and 6 year olds hated it and do not want to go back for a while.

Why take the chance? That seems kind of young and could really scare them. There are lots of other fun things to do. Or make a haunted house in your garage for the neighborhood kids to go through and have your daughters dress up and jump out and scare kids. That could be fun.

Try to see if you could find a haunted house that's "just for kids" something that's not as scary as most haunted houses. I really think that even though they seem eager to go, it could really frighten them more than they realize. You could also throw them a halloween party that they could invite some of thier friends too, instead of going to the haunted house, or create your own at home..for the halloween party, atleast this way, you could make sure it wasn't going to be "too" scary for them, they could even help you create it..so they know it's all made up..and nothings real.

Good luck.

I think it depends on the child. My little cousin is 12 years old and she still HATES going into haunted houses, but her brother is younger than her (about 7 or 8) and he loves going in them. Honestly, i would explain to your kids whats going to happen and make sure they know whats comming and if they still watn to go, then i say sure why not

if they think they are ready and they want to go, then you should take them. i don't think they'll have nightmares cuz they're probably old enough. when i was eight, things like haunted houses never used to scare me, and i'm generally a scaredy-cat. lol :-)
so yeah, if they think they're ready, which they probably are, you should take them. at first, make sure you're with them, in case they do get scared.

i think if your kids WANT to go, you should let them. And eight years old sounds old enough for a haunted house, especially if there is an adult with them

Well, my opinion is that a child shouldn't go until they fully understand that it is all fake and completely understand the meaning of the holiday as well. Why you would enjoy taking your child to a event that would try and scare the living boots off of them I will never understand but..... I would not let them go until they completely understand the concept of halloween and that the amusement is simply make believe. I wish you and your well and a safe adventure on halloween night!
