Let the cost of one pound of meat be 3X.
Therefore, one loaf of bread is X.

(2 x X) + 3X = 5X
5X = $12
X = $2.4
2X = 2.4 x 2
= $4.80

Khong spent $4.80 on the bread. (And $7.20 on the meat if you checked back)

Let x be the number of loaves of bread he bought, and y be the number of pounds of meat.

Let p be the price of a loaf of bread, and q be the price of a pound of meat.

Then x=2y, and q=3p. Also, xp+yq=12. xp is the amount spent on bread, and yq is the amount spent on meat.

Since x=2y and q=3p, you have xp+3xp/2=12, so
xp(1+3/2)=xp(5/2)=12. Therefore xp, the amount he spent on bread, is 12*2/5=24/5=$4.80.
