I am beginning to think I am at any early stage of OCD. My compulsion is with fire. Before, I leave the house everyday, I check the ashtrays, curling irons, candles, coffee pot, oven, etc. at least three times, which more than half of them have not been used within 10 hours. Now, it has come to checking them while I am home. Nothing can be by the curling iron or stove or I get nervous sometimes even if they have been off for a long time. I am in my mid twenties. I have never experienced a fire, nor has anyone I have know, so where has this obsession come from????

Everybody gets obsessed with different things. Who knows why?The fear of fire is a common one I think. I used to also panic when I was outside thinking that the oven was on...OCD is a quite complex disorder. It seems that you are aware of your strange ritual. This is a good sign. Try to read a book called "the boy who could not stop washing" it will give you lots of info on the illness. If you are not able to separate yourself from these strange thoughts, you should see a therapist because this rituals will interfere with your life. Good luck

You sound like you might have OCD. Obsessions really don't make too much sense when it comes down to it. My OCD's were germs, planes flying into my house, and meat. I now take medication for it and it helps. Get some help while you are young, I am in my 40's and just got some help a few years ago. It is amazing and wonderful, not have to constantly obsess about things.

Well most people with OCD expeirience some headaches, nervousness or other pains when they leave somthing undone that should be. You might have OCD, but only a therapist could diagnose that. You also could just be afraid of fire, though you have never been in a fire doesnt mean that it scares you just as much as someone who has been in a fire. If youre afraid to die by fire or just be in a fire then that could be it.

You don't have it bad, trust me. We will just call them mini me's, sometimes they act up and get the paranoids after us. It's OK, I have been dealing with OCD's for about 30 yrs. now and only irritate a few people. I do the same thing, but I also have to have all my books in a particular order, along with my can goods, box goods, pens, pencils and so on and on and on. Just be glad that you want have to worry about a fire. It will all be ok, trust me.

i do the same thing, except its with people. Everytime i go into my car, i have to check the back seat and make sure no one is in there, lying down on the floor waiting for me. And when i go soewhere and if i'm at home by myself, i have to check every room and make sure no one is in the house, including behind the shower curtain, underneath all tables and beds, and anywhere else that they can hide, and i have to check all windows and doors to see if they're locked. Even after all that, it takes me a good hour to feel safe.

OCD is a brain disorder --- like anxiety or depression --- which if you have it, that means you were born with it, so don't think of it as something you caused to happen. I have had it for as long as I have had the other two (also, panic) I mentioned above, and the treatment for it is therapy combined with medication. See a psychiatrist to get your treatment program in place; you owe it to yourself!

Sometimes OCD type behavior is just behavior to avoid focusing on something else-something painful?
