I am more religious about my computer usage than about any particular act of faith - but I am a very spiritual person. I have long been interested in the meaning of life and the nature of our existence. Fortunately I was not indoctrinated into one religion as a child, but I was exposed to several and was able to piece together my own answers based upon common sense and my own understanding of truth.
I have accepted minister credentials and create ceremonies for people. I very often find myself examining my life and my path. I think that makes me "religious" or spiritual, I guess.
I think people embrace an organized faith often times out of fear, depression, even peer pressure. I think, unfortunately, it is seldom that any of us embrace an organized faith because of it's beauty or uplifing components - which is what I think people should do. I mean, religion is a man made tool, there to help us get through life - let's pick the ones that build us up and empower us rather than those that belittle us or foster hate for others.
Peace!

I honestly cannot give a whole answer here... My faith prolly has a lot to do with my upbringing though. My mother took me to as many religious places (churches, synogogues, groves, etc) that would allow visitors. I chose my path from there. Maybe because when I was older I read about the oppression of women, grew up to be a feminist and chose my path from there. I think, for me at least, it was my whole life path that lead me to where I am now. Not just one experience or one person, or even my family.

People become religious when they make the mistake of believing that we are earthly beings having a spiritual experience, rather than realizing that it's the other way around. They cling to rote religious practices rather than looking for the divine within.

My father is not religious, my mother believes in God, but my personal faith comes not from going to church, or talking to a religious person, but from researching the bible and studying the bible and holding to what the bible really wants us to do and how to act and how to love. Churches now have their own doctrines, besides the bible. It's what a church believes and not what the bible says to believe in. Hold by the truth of the bible alone and your faith will grow more than it would if you just went to church and never read the bible and held to only the churches doctrine.

There are many reasons for it. Sometimes it is passed on by the parents. Sometimes it is gained through friends. And still other times it is a product of long , hard soul searching within an individual. Mine came from an internal struggle.

Im not religious but i think that people become that way out of fear. Maybe they just want to believe theres something to help them and they arent here just alone or they have a reason to live that way. Maybe its because religion or the the point of believing in a god helps them, it helps society be better and them to be a better person and they dont want to be better just because. No one is listening until you make a mistake....

The first thing that has to happen is that God has to draw you to Him. Being curious is usually a sign that He is drawing you.
When He drew me it was because He knew I was ready. I had tried about everything else looking to fill that need for Him.
It was then that a Christian counselor showed me a Bible verse that said we can't serve two masters. We will only really love one of them.
In this life their are two masters to pick from. Satan or God.
Who wants you happy and peaceful? Who wants you suffering and miserable.
You just take your pick. At least that's what I did.

I might take some heat for this, but it all falls under a system of very well thought out ideas. Ideas that men created with a false sense of salvation through condemnation for disobedience and salvation through obedience. Ideas of rewards and suffering, should you choose their path or stray the path. It is a psychological prison of false hope created to keep control of humanity.

weak mindedness is what makes people religious. no one wants to feel all alone in the world. everyone wants something to cling to. some people find "god," some do drugs, some get obsessed with success, money, etc.
people choose to believe the impossible and call it "faith." it's plain and simple stupidity. people have been living and dying for their "gods" all over the world for all of time. it's rediculous and sad. the misery and opression that has been and continues to be caused by organized religion is sickening.

It comes from upbringing, then personal discernment, then trying to find a good answer to the question...why are we here...is this all there is?
