Usually if you are dehydrated, you can actually dilute the blood by drinking too much water, which will throw off your sodium and sugar levels. While Gatorade is OK (I say OK because Gatorade is HIGH in sugar which is not good), pedialite is actually superior. Not only do you need salt, but dehydration leads to electrolyte imbalances in the body. Gatorade does not contain an electrolyte replacement, is high in sugar and thus in not the "best" for you to if you are dehydrated. Something with electrolytes is much better. Even if its just plain water with an electrolyte added its by far better then Gatorade.
If you are dehydrated (from flu, heat exhaustion, etc) then you require electrolytes, and salt, with some sugar. If you are just working out and looking for something to drink to keep you up and going, then Gatorade is sufficient as it has sugar which you body can use as energy almost immediately.
Just as an FYI its also best to drink liquids at room temp, as your body actually has to use energy to heat the liquid to body temp. Also drinking cold drinks can slow your digestion and abortion.

Good question and you're very observant. My son has a kidney disorder that causes him to be dehydrated all the time. Per his Doctor, he is not allowed to use Gatorade to rehydrate himself, because sodium (salt) makes you more thirsty and is therefore harder on his kidneys. Bingo! :)

When you perspire through a hard workout or other type of exercise, your body loses both potassium and sodium. The salt in Gatorade is to help replace the sodium. They also add potassium replacement as well.

Your body naturally has salt in it and if you sweat it out then it comes out of your pores salty (hence why ur sweat taste disgusting and why it stings ur eyes) so gatorade has salt in it to put back in your body what is comming out.

Because you lost salt during exercise, it was *sweated out*, if you replace salt then just remember: where salt goes, water follows. So if you put salt into your body you will retain more water for awhile.

It has salt in it to keep in balance how much salt and how much water is in the body so that every thing does not become too watery

When you sweat, you lose salts. Gatorade replaces those salts.

The salt helps to hold the water in your system so you don't urinate it all out right away.
