The two use very different technologies, but in fact both can provide excellent pictures and you really can't go wrong with either. Here are the major points to consider:
Picture quality of plasma is brighter, better color, better blacks than LCD.
But LCD pictures can look quite good; we’re not talking huge differences.
Sharpness is the same for equivalent pixel counts. Some newer LCDs have 1080 x 1920 resolution, most plasmas still in the 768 x 1024 range.
Plasma is heavier and uses more power than flat panel LCD.
There are reports that plasmas are not as reliable or they don't last as long, but that is no longer true with the latest models. (Both LCD and plasmas have 60,00hr expected lifetime.) Plasma phosphors dim slowly over time (but not as fast as CRT phosphors); but direct view LCDs use flourescent lamps which also dim and eventually burn out (some are replaceable). Projection LCD sets have bulbs of limited life, but are replaceable and the lifetime is a few thousand hours of viewing.
Plasmas are subject to burn-in. A stationary image left on the screen for a long time could produce a permanent ghost image. The most risk is when viewing a lot of 4:3 ratio pictures (non-HD), which are displayed with vertical dark areas on the left and right to fill in the wide screen. Newer plasma designs have minimized this problem and here are ways to avoid it: many sets have a "stretch" mode which widens the picture to fill the whole screen, or will use gray bars instead of black bars. Burn-in also be a problem with extended playing of video games if there is a background image that remains stationary.
Plasmas come in larger sizes, although large flat panel LCDs are coming out, but they are expensive. LCD projectors can be 70".
LCD contrast and brightness can be reduced when viewing from off-center (both flat and projector, but sets will vary). At present, plasmas have very reflective front surfaces which could be a problem in room with lamps and windows that can be reflected by the screen. LCDs look better in bright environments, while plasmas look better in darker rooms.

Flat-panel displays are the future of television - whether consumers like them or not is another matter. HDTV, digital convergence, and high-resolution DVD will all have contributed to making CRT TVs obsolete within two years. That's not the case yet, but it is on the way. And if you're tempted to acquire a flat-panel TV, you will need to deal with another issue: the choice between two technologies that are complementary yet very different from one another: plasma and LCD.
For computer monitors, the choice is easy, with LCDs having won the market, but for TV, the two technologies are still competing. This article is intended to give you a good look at both technologies, their strong points and their weaknesses, so that you can get an idea of what the choice of each of the technologies implies for home use. The article is based on a presentation made by Tom's Hardware Guide France on December 23rd in partnership with the magazine La Recherche, as part of a cycle of technology conferences at the CNAM engineering school at the Arts et Métiers museum in Paris.

The main tech difference is that LCD screens produce an image by turning on semi-transparent pixels to certain colors, and you see the image because a light *behind* the pixels shines through them. Plasma displays much like a standard CRT screen, where each pixel itself gives off light (to varying degrees), driven by a signal.
Visually, Plasma displays have deeper, richer color and truer blacks. LCDs have a hard time with black since the semi-transparent pixels are never truly opaque, so some of the backlight always comes through. Plasmas also have a higher contrast ratio.
Costwise, a plasma display the same size of an LCD display will usually cost about 20-40% more. But it's worth it, believe me :)

well in my econ class we were lo king into the new techs by comparing adds from best buy and circuit city we found that the LCD were more expensive in all cases when comparing by inch size and through further research we found as a group that LCD did have better quality images from the back lit screen. even though both screens were running at 1080! this research also helped me make my decision on the purchase of my 32inch LCD screen HDTV. i suggest you do some more research before making a final decision.

I think LCD is better bc plasma can burn images into your tv and ruin it, for example like if you leave a movie paused to long it will burn that imagine into ur plasma.plus LCD are less expensive, and still pretty flat and not heavy, its definately the way to go.

The LCD is bad for your eyes.
A LCD is flickered screen by back lights under you down't know.
Others man said that he like CRT than LCD.
In my opinion, you does not matter these price.
You would better consider your eyes health.
Good luck.

if you're on a budget, currys do a really good 32 inch Orion model with built in freeview for around £420. I was wary about buying cheaper models but the picture looks really great when a 360 is played through it
