So I came home from this marching competition to find a lump on the right side of my neck. I rubbed it and it went down but now its sore and still there but smaller. Its not bothering me in any other way...

could it be something serious? Should I see a doc? Could it be allergies? Its under the skin pretty much in line with my ear

It could be a lymph node, or possibility a cyst. Check with your doctor for sure.

Sounds like a knot in the neck, when you rub a knot out it gets smaller and will be sore. Just stretch your neck and rub it more. (I do this for a living by the way) If it still has not gone away then it is a lymph node and you don't need to worry, that just means that you may be fighting off an infection and your node is a little backed up. Drink lots of water.

Could be a muscle pull. If it's still there, but smaller, you know it isn't a cyst or a tumor (they don't get smaller when you rub them). Give it a day or so and if it's still there, check with your doctor.
This may have nothing to do with it, but it seems that in marching competitions, your head and neck is held in a very stiff position, and your shoulders don't move as they normally do when you walk, so that may have caused this problem, which could just be a kinked muscle. But if it's not better in a day or so, get it checked out.

When you say 'lump' the first word that comes in my mind is cancer. Now, I don't know if you can have a cancer lump in your neck, but, just to be on the safe side, go to a doctor. The sooner, the better. GO NOW!

Sounds like your lymph nodes. They often get inflamed when you have an infection. Have your doctor take a peek regardless.

It may be lymph node swelling. They will swell sometimes if you are not feeling well.
