Words are a very powerful weapon. Likewise ideas are too. A promise of endless rewards for obedience or a condemnation of endless suffering for disobedience. Self Proclaimed Righteous Prophets and Men of God, demanding submission to an idea through manipulative words. Submission given for fear of damnation and hopes of rewards.

Any religion in the wrong hands can become oppressive. There are those who would use it to litterally scare the hell into you, as in do as i say or go there forever! Truely though, in the right hands it tends to focus more on love, peace and understanding. Thsts the before you do something think how it would make you feel if it were you thing. The only reward there is that you are a kinder person and people will remember that if ever you do need help.

I read out of the King James version of the holy bible and l have yet to find endless or eternal suffering or punishment.Nor have l found that the devil will be torturing anyone in this place called hell either. My bible says he will be cast there also.Endless rewards??? Eternal life yes, psychologically oppressed I don't think so. Just a man who read the bible and the Darwin theory both and found more promise and truth in God's word is that so wrong???

Did anybody see that Jesus Camp movie??? Perfect example of your Question! I would agree. That's why on my path, words are used to bouy up your spirit, and make you feel the love. Or make you feel the pain you inflict on others. THAT is used to teach us right and wrong. The whole Fear your God thing is just to negative....why create life if only to beat it into submission?

Very good guestion!!! Kudos

You have it all wrong, my friend, although your post is very eloquent. I like your writing.

I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian home. I mean Shi'ite Fundamentalist Christian home. I rebelled completely at what you are claiming was the deal from God.

How blind I was.

When I finally wised up, I realized that God is not offering us a choice of Heaven or Hell.

We condemned ourselves to Hell with the first lie we told or gum we stole.

He is offering us the chance to be SAVED from it.
Why? Who can explain that kind of love...

Grab hold of it my brother, read it, study it. It is the truth and you will be set free.

I see your point. Religions threaten people with afterlife endless mishaps if they don't follow the religion's criteria. Many religious people, know it or not, pressure people to believe in those threats and to give in to them... That's ethically wrong.... Even the divine eternal punishments are.....

Yeah! That's why it's so important to differentiate between manmade "religion" and the Creator - Savior - God of love.

The Bible says, "He hath showed thee, O man, what is good. And what doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?" Micah 6:8
