I'd like to go to school and become an officer upon graduation. I am giving serious thought to joining the reserves while in school as this will pay for my tuition but also give me valuable military experience as I do not wish to be the type of officer that goes in with no more experience than any other enlisted. However since it is obviously war time, is this a feasible idea? If I join the reserves, will I just end up spending the next few years in Iraq instead of class? I think the answer is obvious if I were going infantry, but I will be going into intel. Most intel jobs are well over 100% full.

Joining the military is very honorable.

BUT, if you join the reserves, plan on a couple of tours visiting Iraq. May not be the best bet if you want to finish school on time.

No, not at all. It is a privilege and honor that some Americans don't get to do and will never appreciate or understand unless you serve. Dd you know that most military schools including basic can give you college credit. Use the money that Uncle Sam gives to you to better yourself, that what it's all about. The reserves is a part time duty so that gives you enough time to be civilian. You might like it and decide to go active duty. Yes, it might help you relate more to your troops with the prior enlisted experience. Take that time to grow into a leader. You come across a lot of leaders in your career some good and some bad, but to me the heart of it all is the NCO corps. Don't look back, go for it.

I suggest you look at the Air National Guard. Lots of intel people are need in Iraq and Afghanistan For the Army. There are many great intel opportunities in the Air Guard for qualified and motivated individuals.

Uncle Sam gonna put you on the next flight to Baghdad and you're gonna be making friends with a lot of scorpions and AK-47 carrying psychos. Steer clear of the military as long as Dubya's in office, at least. Then consider it at a later time. For now, just work your way through school. It's safer this way.

If you can stay away from Infantry do so. It is a good idea to join the reserves and finish your schooling though.

The GI Bill that will pay your tuition and give you a monthly income is not all its cracked up to be. My BF is in the AF and uses his GI Bill to go to school. Every month he has to literally fight with the Admin. to get his money. They find all kinds of loop holes to screw him out of money they promised him. I wouldn't do it if I were you. Find some other type of financial aid.
