Easy answer here guys, don't over think this one.

Your VCR is stereo, it doesn't have the 5.1 audio channels encoded on the tape, it will only be able to produce a stereo signal.

You can set your receiver to Pro Logic II, and that will split the signal up and fake a surround signal, but it is still truly a stereo one.

Good luck!

Ok, first you MUST get True Stereo Signal to the RECIEVER for it to process Dolby Surround.......

The MOST RELIABLE setup is to Connect your Cablevision RF line to the VCR, The DVD (if available) THEN to your TV.....this allows the RF Cable signal to be recorded by the VCR, the DVD.

Next your Video outputs on your VCR AND your DVD must be connected DIRECTLY to your TV's Video Inputs to properly Process that "recorded" or "played-back" signal...this will result in TRUE Stereo audio getting to your TV.

Lastly, Connect your TV's AUDIO OUTPUT lines DIRECTLY to your RECIEVER, then set your RECIEVER to process Dolby Pro-Logic or Dolby Digital......your rear and center speakers will stay muted until a TV show that has a Pro-Logic signal is active.....same applies to DVDs and VCR tapes.....Stereo TV shows will have only the Front left and Right speakers active in this mode.
