The bottom of my box was leaking and I put the whole box in a plastic bag and about a week later saw 2 little bugs in the bottom of the plastic bag. Should I throw the whole box out, or is this normal? (i put the remaining grits in a plastic bowl and put in refrig.)

Any grain product could have flour weevils in it. Govt standards permit a certain percentage of bugs in flour. when their eggs hatch you get the bugs eating their way through the contents of the box. i never heard of it in grits which is corn but it sure is popular in cereals and pancake mix and cake mix that have been sitting on the shelf too long.

If my wife saw it she would throw out the whole box and look to see what else in the cabinet might be ready to throw out.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

It's inevitable that at some point in everybody's life,,they are gonna find weevils in a various food products.
Grain type things especially,,Flour,Cornmeal,
Oatmeal,Rice,Pasta,etc.
Breakfast cereals even.

I don't know WHEN or Where they get into things.

But they Can and Do multiply in a pantry and get into other things.

"BUGS crawling around in your food" is certainly GROSS!!
But I don't think they're actually very nasty or disease-carrying or toxic.

Some folks overlook a few & remove them from the food product.
Other folks throw the stuff away no matter what.

I never heard of anyone getting sick,or having any ill effect.

If you had them in ONE box,,,don't be surprised to find them in other stuff.

You may want to check stuff out.
Pour the box/package contents into a pot or pan and dig around in it,stir it,,whatever.

Best to then put it in a plastic bag or the 'fridge for storage,,if it passses inspection.

You may also want to Microwave the stuff on hi for a minute or so,,that will kill bugs,eggs,etc...if you chose to save any food after removing a couple lil' weevils.

It's a GROSS thought,,the weevil thing,,,but we probably inhale LOTS grosser stuff everyday ,,just breathing.

Or,,ya can look on THE BRIGHT SIDE!!!
Just consider them,,Free Extra Protein :)

Seriously,,Check your Other stuff,,the weevils can spread and get into all sorts of stuff they dont even like,,just to look around.
You'll find yourself throwing out all kinds of food it they do happen to spread.

The bugs probably got into the box of grits in the store or in your house and laid the eggs in your leaky box. Yes, you should throw the whole box out. Keep all flour/grain products in your fridge until you figure out if the bugs are in your house, and if so get rid of them.

The grits dont have eggs but the bugs that got into the box do, throw it away and buy some more.

I don't know what to think, I always find little black specks in my grits. They seem to get more of them the longer I keep the grits. They don't move but it still makes me nervous not knowing what they are.

Little bugs have a lot of protein and surprisingly taste very good. Why throw out a good thing? Refrigerate and eat at will. Good Luck ! :)

Honestly? Kinda creepy, but I'm being honest. When I have food that has bugs in it......I just use it anyways. It doesn't bother me that much and I think it's funny to have my wife and kids eat it too and not know.
