There is a cuticle oil (avocado "E" for nails and skin). I had the same problem and it worked pretty good for me you can buy it at SALLY.

there are these things you canbuy from avon and mary kay, i'm pretty sure they have them in stores as well. They kinda look like tweezers, you push back your cuticles and then you take the little tweezer thing and cut off the extra. or...just take the metal nail file on the other end of your nail clippers and push your cuticles back, not too hard, just softly. do that often, and they wont split

the condition of your skin and nails is also related to your diet ....you need to improve your diet. mineral and vitamin deficiencies can cause your cuticles to peel and split

I'm not really sure how to prevent them, but I know that if you put Neosporin on them, they will heal up quite nicely.
