Since they are expecting their fourth child and may not be able to get out to a restaurant, why not try a basket filled with microwave popcorn, fun candy treats and either a nice DVD that they have said they wanted or a gift card for one that they can pick out themselves. If you want you can also slip in a gift card for a restaurant that delivers. Hope this helps!!

For the preggers one, a selection of gift certificates would be nice, one for Blockbuster, one for Walmart, one for the grocery. They could get a CD rental, popcorn and soda, and something to keep the baby entertained. $10 each, that would be $30 bucks, or cut the blockbuster one down to $5. You could put a note on it explaining that it is a stress reliever kit, and explain like I just did.
I like gift baskets, too. Fix one full of snackies, and put the blockbuster card in the middle.
I saw one at work that was cute. It had adult snacks like individual serving size of nuts, pretzels, peanut butter/cheese crackers, beer, and a beer stein in the middle. A glass stein at walmart is a couple bucks, the snacks a few bucks, you would only put in a couple cans/bottles of the beer.Gift baskets make good regifting presents, too. If he does not drink beer, he can give it to the ne'er do well brother -in-law.
And home made treats are always a hit. Chocolate chip cookies, fudge, spiced nuts, jams, jellies, whatever your specialy is, wrap it up in pretty jars or cans, lots of ribbons. Most people love that sort of thing, and it does not cost much.

why don't you go ahead and do the gift certificate for dinner, and see if the other person in the office will do a gift certificate for a night of child care. I know there are day cares by me that can accommodate this sort of thing . especially around the holidays.

The best thing to do for christmas is to give a seasonal present. One of my favs is an ornament for the tree. Perhaps one that is for the new baby, a family one, a chirpractor one. You can spend as little or as much as you like, and it is still quite thoughtful.
Then, every year when they decorate again, they will think - oh, Jane gave us this - love this.

It is NOT proper to buy gifts for anyone that is over you at work.
It is considered a bribe, or shall we say brown-nosing.
Sorry but its the truth.
In a lot of companies it is NOT allowed at all, no matter how small the gift. It just isn't proper.

I'm thinking the restaurant thing might be nice.. the fact that they're busy means they probably haven't had a quiet evening out.
