Politics aside, would it not make sense for people who are opposed to immigration to use the English language properly before complaining that recent immigrants do not bother learning the language? On the other hand, why do people still insist on waving flags of their home country while protesting proposed immigration legislation here?

It just seems to me that in each case the behavior is counter-productive to the goals of each group. Does anyone else feel the same?

You know, here in Texas, we are becoming more and more like Mexico every day. Billboards and radio stations are popping up en espanol more frequently, and when you visit certain venues and close your eyes, the only language you'll hear is espanol. The great irony is that my home is a very short distance from the San Jacinto Battleground, where Texas independence from Mexico was fought for and won. Illegals that are here must be deported and not allowed back in. No other country in the world has open immigration, and the fact that the US has leaders who have lost their minds and authorize such open immigration is frightening to me. Your observation that the "target" keeps moving and morphing is astute and painfully true. Unfortunately, the answer is all of the above. Unless and until the people of the US revolt against this unbelievable situation, our country will be lost. Then we'll see the blessings of liberty that were bestowed on us at our country's founding, withdrawn and lost. Sad days...

I don't think semantics, grammar or flags really make much of a difference in this debate although I wish NPR would find an immigrant protesting her deportation after being here illegally for years and years to interview who has managed to learn even a couple of words in English!!

We need to bill Mexico for being a safety valve for their population and funding their economy. Millions and millions of US dollars generated as wages for illegals are being sent to Mexico instead of being recycled back into OUR economy! This should be enough to rebuild their country to some extent and stem the tide, but it ain't even making a dent apparently. The Irish did it well and now people in science and computers are moving there and quite happy to leave behind our crime and increasingly de-funded education and spread thin health care dollars from the border to the backwoods.

We also need to demand, yes, demand, that Mexico allow US citizens the full run of their nation without undue bureaucracy.
To cross the border the other way still requires forms, fees, hassles and mordida bribes. You can't work very easily and buying real estate is nearly impossible. Not so for illegals here. This has got to go!

LOL and yes to your first question. As for your second question, I am not opposed to Mexicans waving their flag because I and any rational person cannot expect for them to give up who they are and where they come from just because they are in a new country BUT I do expect them to raise and respect the AMerican flag as well along with adapting to our customs and laws. Yes it is counter productive this behavior but I feel that when mexicans are criticized for waving their flags and being proud of being mexican they feel they are put in a position where they have to choose one or the other, not fair if you ask me. (which you did btw!) Sure they are here and should abide by our laws but if they are going to be criticized and put down anyways (and they know this) why should they lose their roots as well??!

Yes, they should learn the English language and spell and punctuate properly. Sometimes we are in a hurry, though.

They shouldn't illegally enter the USA, then protest the laws that all other immigrants must follow. They are 'biting the hand that feeds them'. They fled their countries due to their lawlessness and corrupt governments, then come here and call us 'racists' because we want our laws enforced. We want our borders closed to reduce or stop illegal immigration and we want to deport illegals.

This is a Q&A forum. You will not convince anyone of your point of view. Those that usually ask questions here are not seeking answers but phrasing questions to hide a statement.

Good luck though.

If you looked at my answers, you would find that my responses are in perfect English, or at least as good as I need to avoid misinterpretation.
