Don't tell me you never ate canned tuna. If you have, why are you against canned fish? Anyway, like somebody else said, it's basically fish meatloaf. It's not bad. If you eat vienna sausages, canned corned beef, Spam - gefilte fish is the fish equivalent, but a little less processed.
The hardest part for people to get over is the jelly it often comes in. You don't have to eat the jelly, but you can. I don't know what the jelly in the jars is, but in homemade gefilte fish it's fish stock. Any properly made stock (not broth - they're not the same thing) gels when it cools down. This is due to collagen in the bones and connective tissue being converted into gelatin during the cooking process.

They are fish that are caught by hand using the unconventional method of calling then to shore in the Hebrew language whereupon they "jump readily into jars or containers ",in which they then are preserved.
In the USA I believe the Catskills after the ice breaks is a "modern-day" Gefilte source, You must call "here boy"
The bait of choice is Schmurah Matzoh...
They must be caught before Purim.............
Then I started to think this is all yadda yadda....I've learn't something for myself>>over it now!!!! look up
Gefilte Storyby Lawrence Sherry if you're really into the answer!!!!!
Ps As for canned fish...Salmon and onion with a dash of vinegar, salt and pepper on a fresh roll is to......die for!

I suggest the 'sweet' kind of Gefilte Fish or one make with Pike and/or Whitefish. Gefilte means 'filled' or 'stuffed'. Sort of like a meatball made with fish. Go to a kosher deli and get one, or buy a jar (better than canned) of Mother's, Mrs. Adler's, Roceach or Horowitz-Margeretin.
Put a LITTLE horseradish on it (Gold's is a National brand). It's delicious.

It is no worse in concept than meatloaf. It is made with ground fish, formed into patties or ball shapes, possibly with breadcrums and egg and other stuff, sometimes breaded on the outside and poached in fish broth. It has the advantage that the fish bones are removed in the process, and it would be easier to divide among family members.
(the name came from hundreds of years ago using the fish skin to shape the fish pattie.)[the fish made filled: ge filte]
Why would you be so set against canned fish ? For many years and in many situations it was the only way: canned tuna, canned salmon, canned sardines with or without mustard, canned smoked kippers.
Don't be so uppity; many have shared a can of mackerel with their favorite cat.

It is a fish that is cooked and then pickled in some type of brine. Just like what people do with pig's feet. They cook it and then they put it in some type of brine, which is usually made with vinegar and spices. But, you ask who would eat fish in either a can or a jar? A lot of people sit and eat sardines and the most eloquent of people eat caviar, which is fish roe. So, to each his own.

It's a Jewish food, boiled fish patties, also available in bottles in the refrigerated section of markets. It is disgusting, but in a bland sort of way. If your curiosity gets the best of you, I've heard that it is often eaten with horseradish.
