When i look into the mirror i look pretty and stuff then when i take a picture i look soooo bad. It does not make sense, but what i am trying to say is, is it possible to be not photogenic? and are photogenic people really photogenic? Or is what you see in your picture what you really are?

I'm a professional photographer, so I'll try this one...:)

First issue is that when you see yourself in the mirror, you're not seeing yourself as everyone else sees you -- you're seeing yourself BACKWARDS. To some people, seeing themselves *not backwards* after being used to their mirror image is quite jarring, and they don't like it -- which means they don't like pictures of themselves.

Second...many people get nervous, tense, upset, etc. when someone is taking a picture of them. Nervousness and tenseness affect your facial muscles a LOT, and they tense up -- believe me, hardly anybody looks good with their facial muscles all tensed up. "Photogenic" people are usually quite comfortable with a camera pointing at them, and that shows in the pictures. It's less a question of being pretty or not, it's a question of being comfortable or not. If you feel you're not good looking, if you're very self-conscious, if you think you look bad *today*, then you're not going to like getting your picture taken, believe me that comes through. I spend a lot of time when taking portraits making people feel good about themselves, and making them feel comfortable. Only then can I make good pictures of them (and yes, even after all that some people don't like their pictures -- see the first issue above).
Relax. Enjoy getting your picture taken. Be comfortable with the way you look -- you can't really change it anyway. Enjoy the fact that people care enough about you to want to have pictures of you around when you're not there -- and they don't care if you're photogenic or not, they just like you! :)

I am exactly the same. People don't even recognize me in most pictures that have been taken of me! Then I have friends who always look great in pictures. I think it has a lot to do with bone structure, lighting, and...well, I'm not sure what else, but I wish I knew! I am sooo tired of looking awful in pics!

Do you see a difference between posed pictures (when you are waiting for someone to take the picture) and candid pictures (you weren't aware that someone was taking your picture)? Some people don't react well to having to pose for a picture which could make them non-photogenic. Or maybe they are just plain unattractive and not suitable as subject material for a photograph.
