This business about "Constantine invented catholicism" is a fraud drawn straight out of the Da Vinci code. Educated people never utter such a falsehood. Bishops were using the word "catholic" (Greek for universal) centuries before Constantine was a twinkle in his father's eye. St. Ignatius (who would soon be martyred by the romans for his Christian faith) used the words "Catholic church" in a letter in 110 A.D., within living memory of the last apostle, John, and at a time when people baptized by the apostles themselves were still common.
The Catholic and Orthodox churches were the only ones to exist for 1500 years.... as unhappy as that reality may make some, it is a reality that is going to have to be faced. There is some Catholicism in the history of every living protestant, whether that history is welcome or not.
Protestants would not even have the Bible they hold as their single authority if generations of Catholic and Orthodox monks hadn't hand copied it for over a thousand years...
Can't we all just get along?

Protestants abandoned their Catholic roots because good ol' King Jimmy got an itch and wanted to get a divorce, the Pope said he couldn't (it violated Catholic dogma), then said king started this whole new denomination of Christianity and made life suck for rmost of the Christians who didn't buy into it. Many modern Protestants are never taught this, however, so really don't think about things like this. Many don't even know that Jesus and Jehovah aren't even Jewish names.
And yes, as others have said, Catholics are considered Christians because they accept Jesus as some kind of Messiah. End of story, this is the technical definition of a Christian.

Judaism is the tree from which Christianity grew. But Jesus is the root, not any religion. Religious denominations can and do err and apostasize. Jesus the root is unerring and never changes. Most Jews rejected Christ. Thus a few Jews followed Christ and Christianity started. After this Catholicism apostasized by marrying paganism with Christianity. Some Christians left the church to follow Christ into protesting against the abuses of Rome. Thus Protestants are followers of Christ.
Unfortunately, most Protestants quit following the Holy Spirit who was to lead them out of the darkness and err that was Catholicism and into all truth. They rid themselves of some of the errors propagated by Rome but most protestant churches have retained some of the false doctrines of Catholicism. This is why in Revelation 18:4 God's people are called out of Babylon, out of the false teachings of this mammoth system of apostasy into the plain truth of the gospel as taught by the apostles.
Protestants do not hate Catholics. They hate Catholicism because it is antiChrist. All Protestants should shun any union with Catholicism because this antiChrist system will soon be judged and found wanting. It will then be overthrown. Come out of her my people. There can be no union between Christ and antiChrist.

Actually, the Catholic Church did not start around the year 400 AD. The Catholic Church started when Christ Appointed St. Peter as His Rock(St. Matthew, chapter 16).
The Papacy is traced all the way back to St. Peter.

Catholics are Christians. They follow the pope, Protestants do not.
Protestants broke from the Catholic church because of the way the pope and priests were acting and treating the people.
One issue was Catholicism taught/teaches that priests are the intermediary between men and God. Protestants (Martin Luther to start with) believed each man could have a direct relationship with God.

you can basically thank Martin Luther for that one and his 95 Theses. He offered an alternative to people because the Church was becoming corrupt (BACK THEN, NOT NOW). and after that, it just got more and more complicated and convoluted.
In regards to Debydoo... the Catholic Church is the oldest Christian religion because it began with the Apostles!! not some four hundred years later! The Apostle Peter began the Catholic Church after Christ was crucified.

Journey, it comes down to differing interpretations of the Bible. Yes, in the beginning, there was one Church. Then Luther looked at the Bible, and disagreed with the Church enough to branch off from them. And yes, the branches are spreading wider and wider as people shift in their interpretations. I don't bash the Catholic church, but sometimes I don't agree with its interpretation of the Bible. Disagreeing in no way means disrepecting - I have nothing but the utmost respect for the first Church. I can disagree with you, but totally respect your opinions in the same way. Have a good evening.

You have been misinformed the only thing that has held this church together is the government.Rome needed this organization to control it"s subjects. It may have started out to be the truth but gradually feel away from the truth. But God has always kept a remnant of true believers, just ask Noah. They have changed many of their doctrines in my life time.Remember when you could tell who was a nun and now they annual marriage. How convenient.I wonder what God thinks about that.

You are wrong in your assumption that Christianity has Catholic roots.
Christianity is the following of Jesus Christ and his ministry, not mans religion.
The Catholic church grew out of the Minsistry of Jesus Christ and not the other way around.
The name Protestant (man made as well as the name Catholic) did come from the escape of Catholic rule of both church and country, but neither are what Jesus commanded.
The true church according to the bible is the people that follow Jesus Christ and his teachings. It is not now , nor has it ever been a building, a name on a building, or a business of followers.
I am a Christian, I attend a place of worship where fellow Christians gather together to praise and worship our creator and our Savior. The only name that goes on our building is Christian CHurch ( followers of Jesus Christ). We follow no man that is flesh and blood just as the rest of us are. We do have pastors who have been called by God to help us understand Gods word, BUT, if mans word ever conflicts with Gods word, we stick with Gods word.
Catholics believe that their flesh and blood leader can speak for God, and the bible says that no man can understand or speak for God (this can be found in the book of Romans if you want to read for yourself, as I never want you to take my word in place of the word of the bible)
I do not wish to "bash" anyone or their beliefs, but I do have an obligation to beg them to please read Gods word and to let God mold them in his image, instead of allowing them to continue to mold God in their own image.

the Apostles and ancient christians in the first couple centuries since Christ were decidely not "catholic". They were men of smaller stature and bigger faith.....
This is evident in scripture in many places, which discusses how men are not to esteem one another more then each other, how the chief among the congregation should be a servant...how nobody is to be called FATHER, etc....etc...this is simply not how organized religion treats the "cheif among" them. Pope or Preacher.
Catholicism and organized denominational Christianity do all have one thing in common though, they are DEFILED. Well What 'religion' isn't defiled? Don't take my word for it:
Jam 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world.
The point for anyone trying to find the "right church" or branch of faith...is:
Act 17:24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Christians...Catholics...will you believe that?
