The Persian cat is one of the oldest breeds of cat. In Britain, it is called the "Longhair" or "Persian Longhair" (tipped varieties are known as "Chinchilla").

The Persian cat originates from Persia, but interbreeding of Angoras with native British domestic longhairs in the 19th Century makes the true origin of the breed unclear. The Persian's European debut is credited to Pietro Della Valle, an Italian traveller.

The breed was originally established with a short (but not non-existent) muzzle, but over time this feature has become extremely exaggerated, particularly in North America, and Persians with the more extreme brachycelphalic head type are prone to a number of health problems (specifically affecting their sinuses and breathing) caused by it.

Because their fur is too long and dense for them to maintain themselves, Persian cats need regular grooming. To keep their fur in its best condition, they must be bathed regularly, dried carefully afterwards, and brushed thoroughly every day. Their eyes need to be checked for problems on a regular basis because some animals have trouble keeping them clean.

Prices may vary according to region. I am in the Southeastern United States. These are the ranges I see:

Pet-quality: $250-$500
Show-quality: $800-$2500
Breeder-quality: $500-$900
Top-show: $5500

Persian cats are very sweet and docile cats. They can be quite expensive and yes, they do require a lot of maintenance.
Sadly, they have been reproduced so much so that the things they breed for, such as size and a smashed face, has made them a genetic nightmare.

If you get one, make sure it is from a reputable breeder. Your veterinarian probably takes care of many of them. Plan to brush and comb daily, and the combing has to be from their skin outward. Males tend to mark territory so you will want to get it neutered and females have less chance of uterine cancer when spayed. I would have it done before it reaches 6 months.

They are beautiful cats and very sweet, most are anyway, but their coat matting and runny eyes are what most people tend to complain about.

Persian cats are sweet and really cute, but they shed like crazy.
I saw some at the pet store for around $300.

Lots and lots of hair to brush, have groomed (cut out matted hair, pooh from hair, etc.) and some with the smooshed faces have breathing problems.

They are beautiful, but they are work. Best to go to the animal shelter and get a wonderful, loving cat that would appreciate being in your home. Get a short hair.

They are known for being very sweet and people-responsive cats. I have no idea what one might cost. There are many breeders out there and you just have to look around for one if that's what you want.

Cats are cats though and unless you get an adult cat you cannot predict what it's personality would be.

They come in all different colors. I recommend starting with a Teddy Bear hamster. They are usually nice and live a long time. Check the pound nearby, because sometimes there are perfectly good hamsters there that someone had to give up. Books also help check the library or buy a book! Trust me they really help.
