I know a guy who was like this for years and got tested for celiac disease (severe allergy to gluten). Turns out he has it. He tells me that people of Italian ancestry are slightly more prone to it. Adhering to a gluten free diet is a pain, but he felt so much better (like a human being who could function, as opposed to the alternative, which went on for years) that he does it religiously.

He really had to do his own homework and convince his doctor to test him for the disease, though, because it is relatively rare.

I guess if your BF doesn't want to go to that trouble he could try eliminating gluten from his diet for a few days and see if that has any impact. Check out health food stores for gluten free products, and there should be lots of diet suggestions on the internet.

There isn't really a downside to trying this on your own because it isn't dangerous in any way to go gluten-free for a while, even if you don't have an allergy to it.
