Because Jesus gave authority to Peter and the Apostles:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)
Today's Pope and college of bishops are the direct successors of Peter and the Apostles.
With love in Christ.

If their church was the authority , i believe we would see a very apparent increase of holiness among those who are catholic and who follow the pope, and most importantly attend the eucharist, but I find that they are certainly no more holy than any other professed believers in Christ. So therefore, it makes sense that Jesus alone is the authority.

Listen, Christ isn't present on Earth at this time. So to me church is authority in the sense that it is our job to teach others through the Bible. Still, the only problem i have with the catholics and they're belief in authority is the fact that the pope has too much. My opinion is that for them, the pope is "Christ on earth" and that is idolatry. "Though shalt not have any other Gods before me."
DAVID G: where in the Bible does it say anything about pope being mediator? Get your facts straight.

If your really thought that "Christ Jesus Alone" was the only authority for Christian teachings, then you would throw out all the passages of the Bible which were written by Paul.
He never met Jesus and his teachings are more similar to pagan beliefs of the time than to the teachings of Jesus in the gospels. Why do you follow the teachings of Paul?

'Cause jesus isn't here to make rules, take collection, hear confessions, build palaces in Rome, offend Jews & Muslims, etc. :)
Officially, the catholic church bases its authority (and that of the pope) on the statement in the bible where jesus says Peter is the rock upon which he will build his church. They consider all Popes to be the successors to Peter.
Personally I think they're as nutty as all the other christians, but hey, that's what they claim.

Suppose people were to have thought why do we need Moses or why do we need Joshua we can just pray to God alone--God has put an authority here for us--through his Church---The Catholic Church---He speaks. Listen or not--your choice

<> analyzing and analyzing scripture isn't against Church coaching, rather it rather is inspired. You misunderstand no longer purely Church coaching yet additionally scripture. What the Church teaches is that scripture is to no longer be interpreted in my view. on the grounds that each and every person, finding on their coaching, way of existence and upbringing, might interpret scripture otherwise, the want for one authority is evident. There might properly be as many interpretations as there are human beings...each and every believing their own interpretation to be of God. devoid of an expert to maintain it in examine, someone might properly be led off objective by ability of their own thoughts and intentions. actual we could constantly inspect scripture and learn it to work out if the what the Church teaches is authentic. people who comprehend Church coaching and scripture discover that they are in suitable unity. whilst Catholics are accused of no longer following the Bible, it rather ability we don't stick to three person's interpretation of the Bible. All that we've self belief and prepare might properly be supported with scripture. even with the undeniable fact that, a lot of human beings reject the 2000 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous, consistent interpretation in prefer of their own, own one.

Catholics have long sought total control. Constantine was not the only good example of this. The Catholics of old tended to make a lot of stuff up, read your Bible thoroughly and compare. All huge religious groups tend to water things down, you're best bet is to follow your heart, and of course your Bible.
