You have to read you're Bible and decide for yourself. Obviously if what the speaker says and what the Bible says don't mesh, then he's out. If his motivation is political success or donations it will show in his speaking. Listen if he sounds unbiased, and if he knows what he's talking about. Use your senses, and if unsure, then make sure you check your Bible.

This is really good that you study the Word. This is how you will recognize a lie. If the Pastor is teaching the Word, he's right on. The Scriptures say "Preach the Word in season and out of season" and the "Word doesn't return void". If he's preaching the Scriptures, it doesn't matter what his agenda is, God will use it. My husband is a Pastor and we love it when people read the Scriptures, we love to hear pages turning during his sermons too.

If you're not going to check out the bible for yourself you're just opening yourself up to being deceived. If you're born from above the Spirit will bear witness to what is being preached, but only insofar as you are making the effort to study the Word. This is one of the reasons why the name-it-and-claim-it clowns can thrive. Too much intellectual laziness and reliance on "feelings" on the part of the hearers.

Because when you are truly saved you are given an aspect of the Holy Spirit that is called discernment. This is to tell what is God and what isn't. Also the spoken and the Written Word are for confirming what God is speaking to your heart about. It sould be familiar. When it comes to too much gab about the self then it ain't God doing the speaking.

icheeknows,
I have had the best teacher in that respect. What a professor does is provide several angles from which some in history have expressed their views, and then then presents those views in logical an accountable ways, and then gives his own view, using the reasons to display to the students how he came by that conclusion. The students are then left to make the choice of their own.

If what you are hearing is the truth you will get a witness from the Holy Ghost...
You also might be given other information from the Holy Ghost that applies to your prayers and might be totally different from what the person is speaking about.

I totally agree...........every believer is accountable to himself and God to know the word and know that the speaker is lined up to the word. There is no man I trust so much that I would take only his word on it

You don't. That's why you'd be wise to steer clear of church.
Do athiests ask you to routinely give them a set percentage of your paycheck?
