Rubbing an animals nose in it's own excrement is non productive and somewhat cruel.
In refering to cats urinating or deficating on furniture or outside the litterbox there are a couple of questions you must first address.
1. Is this the only cat using the litterbox. If not get this cat it's own litter box. Often cats do not like to share.
2. Are you keeping the litter box clean? Cats are very clean creatures and many do not want to use a dirty litterbox anymore than you want to use a dirty toilet. Clean the litterbox daily.
3. Cats who refuse to use the litterbox for no apparent reason often are suffering from a medical condition which usually can be taken care of with a simple round of antibiotics. One should consult a veterinarian with the problem. Chances are your cat may have a urinary infection and yes she/he will poop in your house as well with this condition.
4. Ocassionally there is a cat who just will not use the litter box and it is more of a behavioral problem. This is very rare since it goes against the cats natural instinct. However, crating the animal will also help teach it to use his/her litterbox. Consult your local veterinarian.

Of course it doesn't work! Would you like someone rubbing your nose in your own poop?
It's actually works the opposite.
My nieces boyfriend used to do that to his kitties that he left here and now I am having a horrible time with them using the floor instead of the box..he used to rub their noses in it and then throw them in the box so now they are scared of the box...
Do not rub their noses in it...that is very very cruel.

Its not necessary. If you have a clean cat box and show the cat how to dig and use the box they would pick it up quickly. It might just confuse the cat to rub its nose in its mess. Better to pick up the cat and take it to its box and show them to dig and then leave it to them. Sometimes, if the cat is confused and wants to go out of the box, you may need to keep putting it back in its box.

It doesn't work on human babies to get them potty trained either. So, don't do it. It is just a humiliating practice that only serves some humans need to punish something.

~~~geee,,,would you do that to your child if your child had an accident,,,,,sounds like abuse to me,,,,a pet is part of your family,,,not just some "thing" to abuse and kick around . I would say NO it is not effective. Postive reinforcement,,,and makeing sure you take your pet outside for fresh air and let your pet go potty outside,,,,it takes time to teach a pet,,,just like a child,,,time and patience,,,,,and love,,,
It's cruel, and gross
If you have to ask this you shouldn't own an animal
No. It's cruel. The best way is to catch them in the act, scold them, then put them outside for ten minuets.
