probably the most frequent risk is an ear infection called, appropriately, "swimmer's ear"--itching inner ear--ask your pharmisist for boric acid & I think you mix it with peroxide--ask
If the pool smells of chlorine, there is no risk of aids, or other std's. that's all I know about it. That, and don't let your fears make you a victim before you are one--keep enjoying your swims! :)

it always depends of the quality of the water in the public pool you go. some public pools have perfect water and some others have really bad water.

Headlice. Swimming too close to (infested) others can result in hair-to-hair contact, thereby transmitting the lice.
