...or will any DVD-burning software recognize and use the codec I have on my computer?

i've found that you should convert them first otherwise they may not play on standard dvd players.... i use WinAVI video convertor.... then convert from avi to dvd and then burn.... this works when burning with nero 7 or 1click burner program... it doesn't take as long to burn whereas if you go straight to burn then the program that burns will tke forever to do it as it has to convert then burn....good luck

You will need to convert the file to vob. format in PAL/SECAM/MESECAM/NTSC.

The free bundled software that came with your DVD Writer must have a Converter that can do this for you. Burning directly in DivX will make it unreadable on regular DVD Players.
