sorry honey we don't drink his blood, and we don't take communion to make us live. we drink the juice of the grape whether it be ferment or not (depending on different beliefs,) to remind us that he shed his blood for forgiveness of our sins.
we eat the bread for a reminder that his body was broken, for our physical healing.
and although I can quote the scriptures I will not use them.

you dove into very deep waters with this question and I do not want to aggravate my brethern with the truth so I am not going to explain other than Jesus tells exactly what the meaning of bread is not much b4 the last supper and what we do while not in any way harmful, is not based in the message Jesus gave. I will however tell you where to find the answer. Get the works of Cornelious Stam. He explains it all very well, he like us all is not right about everything but about this he was right on. The table blessing is a tradition which the last supper prescribs. One of the above answers is close.

That's a good question. You have to look at what is the meaning of the blood being the life of the sacrifice in the OT. Thus, when we consume the body and blood of Jesus, He physically enters into our being and becomes one with us. Since He is the Author of life, we have life. Personally, it is enough for me that Jesus said we would have life.

It doesn't literally.Jesus told His disciples to eat his flesh and drink his blood .Then right after,he said what I'm saying is spiritual, the flesh profits nothing.(John 6)It was to get them to absorb his teachings. Also later ,at the last supper,he wanted them to recognize his body was to be broken(not his bones)hence the breaking of bread, and his blood to be shed, hence the wine and or grape juice. He said "Do this in rememberance of me". Rememberance...you know like pouring one out for your "Homies".

Gospel According to Saint Matthew
Chapter 26

26 And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body. 27 And taking the chalice, he gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this. 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.

John 6
52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

53Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever."

The wine or juice is a symbol of the blood that He shed for us. It is a ceremony to remember what He did for us.
