Often times when an aircraft manufacturer designs a new aircraft they come up with a set of specific requirements for an engine manufacturer to design and develop. They will then approach the three major engine manufacturers in the world, General Electric, Rolls Royce, and Pratt & Whitney, who will then develop an engine that meets their specifications.

When an airline or customer decides to buy a Boeing or Airbus, depending on the model they select, they often times can choose the engine manufacturer. Some iterations will be slightly more efficient, some slightly more powerful, some have better parts availability, some have slightly longer times between overhaul intervals, etc. Airlines will weigh this all very heavily before they decide which engine manufacture they want to have the aircraft manufacturer to use in the airplanes that they are going to buy from them.
