Make sure the bathroom and kitchen are not only clean but uncluttered so the prospective roommates will feel there is enough room for them and their things. Clear out the second bedroom so they will be able to visualize their things in it. Open up all the curtains to fill the place with light. Buy a nice healthy looking plant or two so the place looks like a real home and take good care of them so you can demonstrate that you are a responsible person. Put away anything that seems even mildly offensive to even one person.....no porn or girly magazines,no cigarettes or ashtrays, no evidence of any obsession such as multiple video games. You can introduce your interests later after the deal is struck but when you are trying to impress someone with your desirability as a roommate, you need to seem as nice, normal and neat as possible.

First make sure they can afford to share it with you. Where did they live before and how long were they there and why are they moving? Do they smoke? Is that OK with you. Find out how long they have been working at a particular place and another thing you need to make clear -- rules about no boyfriends/ girlfriends staying there.

I used to work at a utility company and observed with the frequency of account openings and closings within a short time -- singles seem to establish the most unstable households. They often break up when someone moves a friend in or when someone doesn't pay his share. One day I asked one fellow in an unusually stable arrangement for a long time (years) -- how did they do it? He said they can afford the housing expenses because they all have good jobs.

I agree with all your answers. Clean and neat is the key. But careful who you let into your apartment too. If you feel it would help, have a friend or relative who is good at reading people with you during the interview. That is how I pick tenants. The other person might have an observation you overlooked and also you don't want anyone who would seem at the outset to disrespect you (always trust your intuition). I've always regretted it later when I ignored that small voice or feeling I get during my contact with applicants.

I would be interested in the KIND of person that was moving into my apartment FIRST.

I wouldn't want anyone to move in who was a murderer or drug dealer, etc. because if anything goes down, you could either end up with a bullet in you or in jail. Don’t just let them tell you about themselves, too many people lie. Try to get a criminal background check if you can. I don’t know if they’re available to the public. Maybe that person can get a copy of theirs and give it to you, or you may have to pay to have one done. I’m sure you probably really need someone ASAP, but try to be smart about what strangers you let live with you.

Keep the apartment as clean as possible: No clutter or mess; Clean kitchens and clean bathrooms are important, especially the toilet. Always have at least one trash can.

Try cleaning the things that people don't normally clean daily. 1. Wipe the doors down to remove any fingerprints or scuff marks (including the refrigerator door). 2. Paint over any scuff marks on the wall. 3. Clean all mirrors and windows. 4. And dust, dust, dust. The small things make a big difference. Try placing a small plant in the living room and burning a lightly scented candle, perhaps something that reminds you of the comforts of home like apples and cinnamon.

Organize and clean. Clean the bathrooms and kitchens really well. Toss out anything that is trashed or tattered. Purchase an air freshener, Glade oil plug in - Apple CInnamon. Do your laundry. Don't be so clean that it intimidates someone. You don't want your apartment to smell of bleach or pine-sol. Add a welcome doormat or a funny door mat. Fill a cookie jar with a treat.

Try this: tell them you didn't want to do too much decorating as they might have some ideas.......then, clean, clean and clean some more before they see it....even air conditioning vents, top of the fans, the kitchen and bathroom floors on your knees with a brush....I know most men and what their idea of clean is, but you never know. My adult son is cleaner and tidier than I ever thought of being. He won't live with a roommate because they leave things lying around all the time....drives him crazy...

The most important thing you can do is the least expensive. Keep it clean, tidy and organized. Make sure that there is a place for everything and everything is in its place.

If the place needs paint, choose a light neutral colour.

Make sure there is no mold in the bathroom (black stuff on the grout).

The whole appartment should be smell fresh and clean (no, not like that canned air freashner stuff).

Why dont you paint it, the best colour would be a neutral colour, like cream, and you could get cool paintings, and some souvenirs.
Most of all make sure your apartment is clean and dust-free,and also it must smell good.

Keep it clean and uncluttered. If it needs it fresh paint might be good, in light, neutral colors that would be OK with anyone. A couple of bright pillows can perk up a place as well.
