what happens a lot and is very sad, is that a lot of intellectual people start thinking about God and ask a lot of questions that can't be answered easily. they get stuck on one or more questions that block their mind from accepting God. Some can over-look their unanswered questions and have faith enough to believe anyway, but others can't no matter how hard they try.
This same thing happened to me while I was in 10th grade. I constantly questioned my existance and if God was really there. It seemed like I would go insane with all the questions I had that couldn't be answered. But thankfully God sent me a friend who guided me throughout my troublesome time. She brought me to a meeting where my eyes and heart were opened and I saw God. He presented Himself in a way that made me stop asking and start following.
I just hope the same can happen for those with so many questions.

I really don't understand the question. What would be the most likely cause for you to quit believing in God? There are probably a thousands reason for a person to move away from God. That would be a very personal thing and would probably be because this person stopped learning about God and decided that he or she as an individual was a whole lot smarter than he or she is and didn't need God in his or her life anymore. A person's self worth has a lot to do with moving away from God. It's a sad situation and one that only they and they're feelings can repair. Are you so very much smarter than most or do you just think you are? Self worth is a very effective tool used by Satan...

I saw no proof that God existed so I stopped believing. Then this happened and now I believe.
Several years ago I had an unusual experience concerning an uncle, a distant relative who lived over a thousand miles away.
While driving my car I suddenly felt the unmistakable presence of this relative that I hardly even knew. He was more like someone I had heard about than someone I knew. It was very strange; it felt as though I was momentarily lifted right out of my physical body. I seemed to be suspended somehow beyond space and time, bathed in a love so intense It felt like I could have just disappear into it at any moment if It would have let me. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it seemed to last forever at the same time. I realize how crazy this must sound. The experience was so strong that at first I was afraid I was loosing my grip on reality. I finally managed to chalk it up to an over active imagination.
Three days later I got a call from my aunt telling me that this uncle we are talking about had gone into a coma and died the day I had the experience. It felt like ice water had been poured down my back when she told me this. I had lost any real ideas of God or faith and had become somewhat of an atheist. Needless to say this experience caused me to rethink some of the conclusions I had come to.
I feel blessed to now understand that even in our darkest confusion something loves us so much that it went out of its way to assist me and bring me back to a state of absolute certainty about Gods love for us.
During the experience it seemed like there was a vast amount of information that I was somehow allowed access to. One thing that I came away from this experience understanding beyond any shadow of a doubt was that any Idea that God is unhappy with us or would judge or allow us to be punished for any reason is simply impossible.
I can’t explain the love I felt with words. They simply don’t make words big enough or complete enough to do this. The only way I can begin to convey this love to you is to say that there was simply nothing else there. Nothing but love. No hint of judgment, no displeasure of any sort. It is as though God sees us as being as perfect as we were the day we were created. It is only in our confused idea of ourselves that we seem to have changed.
I hope this is of some help to you. Good luck. Love and blessings.
Your brother don

I believe one of the most common causes of separating from a relationship with the Lord is the loss of a loved one.

I did stop -- because I started using my brain.
Look at "god" and the stories in his bible critically...
"creating the world in 7 days 6000 years ago" -- ah, no. Never happened, tons and tons of scientific proof to show that. Just another creation myth from hebrew goat herders.
"noah's ark" -- ah, no. The size of the ark wouldn't even hold 0.1% of *today's* species of animal life, and thousands of species have gone extinct since then. And what about animals from Australia, Hawaii, Madagascar, N&S America, England, etc. -- no way to get from their isolated locales to the "ark," nothing but ocean in the way. Yet the bible says 2 of every animal on earth went in -- nope. The hebrews could manage that stretch of imagination because the entire world they knew was a few hundred miles of desert.
I could go on and on, but the point is if you look at ANY of the stories in the bible (including most of the jesus myth) with a critical mind and actually THINK about them, you see very quickly that none of them are very plausible, and most of them are downright false. Add to that the fact that "god" doesn't do any more "miracles" as in bible times...and the rise of science to explain the world, and it becomes clear pretty quickly that there is no god, the bible is just stories collected by an ignorant goat-herding nomadic people thousands of years ago, and that none of it is real or has any meaning in today's world.
You can believe if you want to, no problem -- you just can't possibly back up your belief with any rational thought.

Life's problems. God not answering prayers the way we want Him to, or as fast as we would like. Hard times. Death of a loved one and not understanding it. Many things. It's difficult to stay with the faith if it isn't strong. Trials make it stronger if we let God do it. The problem is we get mad and walk away. God doesn't move, we do.

Possibly that would happen if you are attached to some sin or something incompatible with God's holiness.
Sin and God are contrary, so one expels the other.
If you are attached to some sin in your life, you might get rid of God to feel comfortable with it.
That would be the most likely cause.

If I stopped believing in the force-fed Christian version of what God is, it would be because I could no longer ignore the fact that a truly all-loving father would never send me to hell FOREVER no matter what I did.

A complete and utter lack of any evidence whatsoever of God's existence combined with numerous occasions of being stolen from, hurt, and lied to by the very people who claim to represent God.
To the point that even if God DID exist, I wouldn't want anything to do with him or his mindless drones anyway.
I would rather do something with my life instead of threatening others to be just like me.
