Here's what I can suggest...
The person having a neck pain or neck feels tense should avoid using a pillow while sleeping cuz it aggrevates the pain. Instead use a very thin garment under your neck while sleeping to get a slight support. I know its hard and tough sleeping without a cushion but doctors usually recommend the same to the patients having neck pain or tension.
Secondly, she should get a nice massage that will relieve her pain to a great extent. Get it regularly till pain subsides completely.
Last, she should try some neck excercises after doctor's recommendation. Moving neck sideways and up and down will certainly help relieve the pain and the tension. Hope these sugestions will help relieve her neck tension and pain.
Good Luck!

You're such a sweetheart for posting this question for your mom's pain!! ;o)
She may want to try a hot water bottle or a heating pad. It sounds like it's muscular and nothing beats heat with that stuff. Also tell her to take either an Advil or a tylenol, b/c they're anti inflammatory and will help reduce the inflammation of the inflamed tissue. She'll be better by morning.
