A sprout contains an embryo situated between the two cotyledons. When watered the embryo grows and due to the gravity and sunlight, the embryo comes out as a shoot. It has great affinity towards sunlight. this is my answer.

It's called geotropism - the way a plant seed responds to gravity. Once the sprout breaks the surface, then heliotropism (how a plant responds to sunlight) takes over.

It doesn't. What it follows is the light and moisture, the root goes towards the moisture in the dirt and the sprout goes towards the light.
It is called phototropism. Positive phototropism is when the stem grows towards light and negative phototropism is when root grows away from light.

Its simple....The plant just follows the direction of where the sunlight is coming from. Dont believe me? Try this. You kno vines? Well, you might observe that they keep on curving up on all sorts of things. Obseve their ends. Yes. They are facing the light. Got my point? Hope i helped. =)
