There's a long and detailed legal process in place to put a minor away for that long... there was a hearing and it was determined that the crime was bad enough, and the minor was close to old enough, to be tried as an adult. First crime or not, armed robbery is serious stuff, whether anyone was hurt or not. TIt wasn't stealing or breaking and entering... armed robbery.
There is an appeal process that can no begin to try to have the sentence reduced.

Depends on the circumstances. Did he use a firearm? Was anyone injured? You said minor. How old? 17 years 11 months. Dude, do the crime and do the time. If judges sentenced more folks like that then there would be fewer criminals on the street and people would not think that they could get away with three or four crimes before they would be punished. A safer world.

Not if they're a minor. I could see if someone was killed when the crime was committed, but just armed robbery alone...No way! Its wrong, but I think most people deserve a second chance to get their lives together again. People make mistakes, and minors especially shouldn't be put into the system for so long...they're going to be even more messed up when they are released. Its easy to lock people up, but what happens when they get out. You can't just lock people up, and expect that they'll be fine when they get out. Obviously our system of locking people up isn't working b/c we have the highest no. of incarcerated individuals than any other country.
In short...locking up a minor of 20yrs is stupid. Its easy for a lot of you people to comment that if you do the crime that "they should do the time" b/c you've never been to prison. Prison is rough, especially for children. People are getting murdered, stabbed, raped, etc. everyday! Its a horrible place...not to mention you put someone in there long enough, they learn all kind of new tricks that they can use on the street when they get out. If you lock up some kid for 20 years, you've already decided what fate he'll have for the rest of his life. Unless the kid raped or killed someone there's no reason to keep them incarcerated for longer than a few years.

Minor Schminor. If you do the crime you do the time.
Kids commit crimes on a regular basis, they have their hand slapped or get a 15 minute time out. Big deal, it makes a joke of punishment and breeds a more brazen criminal. I don't care what his age is and I would bet my life it isn't his first crime. It is the first one he got caught at, that's all.
It really gripes me to say this but, don't worry, he can cry on the parole board and probably get out in a year or two.
HeII a guy got out after 16 years in Southern California. He was serving life without parole for murdering his wife. Yeah, life WITHOUT parole and out in 16. Go figure...

Please, if you are old enough to concoct a scheme to do an armed robbery then you are old enough to do the time.
Lucky thing for him he doesn't live in a country where they'd do worse. I have no sympathy for anyone that does dumb/selfish crap like that. They should also make him pay back all the money that taxpayers had to pay to support his sorry butt whiles he's in prison.
Most of the societal problems we have today stem from the fact that children were not taught consequences and responsibilities from an early age.

what's minor armed theft, is it one the place the sufferer is threatened with a weapon, advised that they are going to be injured in the event that they don't comply, and terrified by using some jerk, for funds they have not precise to take? i'm hoping they spend an prolonged time in reformatory. Even a generic offense if not deserving of comfortable therapy. a generic offense of a few sort of theft, according to probability. Even at sixteen this jerk could desire to be prosecuted as an grownup and sent to stay with the super boys in huge boy penal complex. (the place he can learn all approximately cleansing soap on a rope)

Look at it this way. If the Minor had robbed a different person, perhaps that person would have, in self defense, killed said Minor thus mooting this series of questions.
Do the crime - Do the time.

armed robbery is a serious crime and should be taken seriously. I believe punish harshly the first time there will be no second time.

Hate to tell you, but if you are of consentual age to be tried as an adult, yes. You committed a violent crime not to be taken lightly. Think before you act.
