I am thinking about keeping XP, but don't know about the newest editions of Vista. I've seen some of it's features, and am not impressed. Give me your opinion on whether vista is right for a graphic designer/photographer.
I also think that the features won't be benificial. they seem like the old XP's hidden features. For instance, XP has a built-in index (and by the way it starts to index right away), and can be searchable, just like MSN Desktop Search. I don't want to upgrade, but the more I think about it, the more I want to.
XP has plenty of enhancements, but Microsoft won't be supporting XP after 2007 or so. I hope you can help me out.
Oh, by the way, I have a old 478-pin processor, but don't think that a Pentium 4 HT upgrade is going to help, even if I do have a Celeron.
Please answer my question with as much detail as possible. THX.

I would keep XP.
In fact, I AM keeping XP.
I am even going so far as to buy a new desktop computer in the next month or so, rather than in 2007 as planned, just to avoid getting Vista. (I don't presently HAVE a desktop ... which is why I am not just upgrading one, lol). Will get one Vista compatible so that I can upgrade if desired ... in a year or two when it is more stable. My new laptop is also Vista compatible, for that reason.
I am also a graphic artist and photographer
I know that MS is trying to make this OS more stable before releasing it, but such as is their previous track record .. I prefer to wait.
So, I would suggest considering the upgrade in another year or so, after doing adequate research at that time.
Also, MS is likely to continue support for XP for at least a few more years, they only recently stopped support for a 98.

In my opinion, Vista is an XP upgrade in respect to some security features. The graphical use interface will be XP plain and simple, unless your computer has the ram and processor and video card sufficient to support the Aero features: Vista will unload the task of doing the GUI to the video card instead of via the os and ram.
If you can do your work well with what you have, there is no reason to upgrade both your computer and your os. The only reason would be to just have the eye candy.
I was thinking of upgrading my computer, which would make it Vista ready, not because of Vista but because of games. But then I decided it would be cheaper to buy an xBox 360, so I did. Down the road, I probably will upgrade, as there are games for the pc only coming out, and I will need a new mobo, ram, and processor for them. And XP, which I have already. MS cannot get away with failing to support XP as soon as Vista comes out - it will continue to support it, as millions of computers at home and in business use it and business definitely is not going to run out and replace all their computers for Vista.

stay with XP in this gadget. reasons why is that Vista takes extra reminiscence than XP, and once you're staying 32 bit that's sometimes a topic in some video games. Upgrading to 3Gb? uncertain no rely if that's properly worth it. Presuming which you're using 32 bit XP, then no application will use extra desirable than 2Gb, and your third stick isn't working twin channel. bypass Vista in case you're turning out to be to be 4Gb RAM and going sixty 4 bit. additionally I ought to declare that this spec is unbalanced for gaming. The 8600GT is in basic terms stable as much as 1024x768 - you would be extra effective spending extra funds on Gfx (like a 9600GT) and much less at something. different than, do not make the blunders of paying for for a miles less costly and nasty PSU. extra effective to get a 300W Seasonic than a 400W no-call (or some names for that rely).

Not sure how much vista will cost. If its like other MS OS's it'll cost $200 or more! Ya know, OS X is $130 or less!!!! I don't understand why MS OS's cost so much. They should give it to u and make u pay through the nose for the antivirus, adware and all that good stuff. On the other download the vista public rc1 and try it out.

Buy a new PC that comes with Vista installed. Or buy a Mac Pro, Vista, and boot into Vista using boot camp.

I usually recommend to clients that they never buy the first release of anything... especially if it says, "MIcrosoft". on the box.
They're notorious for outsourcing their quality tests to the customers' desks...
Sadly, too many of my customers will probably fall for the hype, so I suppose I'll have to install it somewhere, just to keep up

why would you want to subject yourself to microsoft BS? their validation process borders on Nazism. or why would you want to make bill gates richer? from what ive read its not that much different than xp. ps service pack updates are crap.
