Punishment is usually in relationship to behavior. It could include morals I guess but morals are more a learning and feeling thing.

I've always felt punishment teaches us to avoid getting caught. Unless the lesson is explained to us, we won't learn the morals behind it. My parents were great about this, always explained why we shoudn't do something rather than just saying "Bad!" or telling us we'll go to hell.

In this world there is no gray area. There is only right and wrong. Morals are a side affect of living a good life.

Heb 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

Heb 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

Heb 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Punishment is to make you conform to minimum standards of behavior. The minimum is determined by the parents.

Depends on who is punishing. I think sometimes it is to control or program behaviors which are acceptable to our parents, culture, or society.
