I always find that holding a spoonful of yoghurt (any flavour) on the tongue for a minute, then swallowing, is good at getting out the burn of hot spices.

I figure that this is a big reason that Indian curries are always served with yoghurt on the side.

Lemon or lime juice. Follow it with some crackers or bread. I don't know exactly how it works, but I was visiting some latino friends with my nephew, who's 4, and he decided to take a huge bite out of an habenero pepper they had in one of those fruit baskets hanging in their kitchen. His lips got bright red and were a little swollen (not from allergy, just the heat), and he was SCREAMING, his mouth was hurting so bad. As soon as we realized what happened, one of the guys grabbed a lemon or lime (I can't remember which), and cut it and applied it to his mouth and had him suck on it. He was fine in less than two minutes. I had him eat some saltines so he wouldn't get a stomache ache later (absorb the acid). From personal experience, yogurt and milk help a little, but water and pop are horrible, I've also used peanut butter in a pinch (don't ask), and it worked.

dont drink carbonated sodas. it will make it more painful. something like tea or milk any non carbonated drink will do. water or ice will take the stinging out. of you if you want to be brave and stick it out-depending on what age you are.

My mother who is from the south and we always had hot (spicy) food, told us to eat a piece of bread. it really did seem to help. good luck

Whatever you do dont drink it down with pop.. that makes it worse.. water or milk works well.
