Cold sores are commonly brought on by stress and/or illness. You can talk to your doctor about possibly getting some suppressive therapy such as Valtrex but they will never stay away forever unless they come up with a cure for herpes. Also try increasing your vitamins A,C and E they can help with your immune system.

a cold sore is a form herpes simplex virus, and they're contagious. herpes simplex virus type 1 usually causes cold sores, and they generally clear up without treatment in seven to 10 days. avoid kissing and skin contact with people while blisters are present, sharing items, keep your hands clean. limit stress. hope this helps.

You might try Abreva. It cuts down the length of the outbreak. I find that Carmex works well. If it's a severe cold sore, consult your physician.
