Alot of the hastle around the world is being agravated by religious fanatics on all sides, and the sciences are being held back in many ways by people who say that "playing god" is blasphemous.

Would it be sufficient to separate religion from politics, and allow decisions to be made on purely moral and ethical grounds? (yes it is possible to have morals and ethics without god)

There is always a problem when church and state get mixed up. This has always been the case. The USA does well to separate politics and judiciary. Religion must be kept apart in the same way. And, no. Morals and ethics come from a religious root, as does the whole concepts of right and wrong, good and evil. This is acknowledged even at a vey subconscious level. Our moral code comes from the same part of us as our God awareness.

From what I have seen in my 54 years, it has the opposite effect. Just ask Mr. Clinton. No religion, no morals. And don't tell me he goes to church. I do not go to church, but I am better Christian than he is. Science has a place and in most cases is a good thing, but in some cases it is a bad thing. Nuclear war heads. Need I say more? OK then, biological warfare. All products of science. All have killed millions. Do you really think that Saddam is religious and did all that killing for his religion? Do you really think that most of our representatives know what morals are? On both sides of the isle? I do not! Ethical? Politicians have no concept of the word. Having a religious faction in this country keeps things in check. There are far to many for the government to ignore. Go ahead, get rid of religion! See just how fast the world dies.

Based on the respondants here no group is more or less ethical than any other. All have their hateful rude members and all have hopeful positive members.

Religion is not the problem. People loving to hate is the problem.

You are correct. You definately dont need religion to have morals.
Do you realize how much more advanced we would be without religion?
Well of course you do, you asked the question.
But why dont others realize this? because theyre ignorant pricks who cant think for themselves. They look at life as something totally different than what it really is.
This plague (religion) is killing human minds and slowing human intelligence down.

I think that the world would be better off if religions were less organized, less dogmatic.... The Quakers, for example, have no dogma. Problems come about when religions become exclusive, and state that they are right and that all others are wrong., ...and use circular reasoning using their own sacred writings to "prove" that they are "right"...( Jesus loves me; this I know 'cause the bible tells me so...)

Yeah, right... Atheism had (and in some places still has) its fanatics too. In the former Soviet Union and other former communist countries, atheism was the official ideology and many people (as in thousands, if not millions) were killed or put to prisons or forced labor just for expressing their faith in public.

No more than wiping out atheism (Kim wots his face the North Korean etc.) Your best bet would be to wipe out the entire human race- there'd be a lot more peace then...

The problem is humanity in general, not the philosophies we believe.

Would wiping out organised religion give us a better chance of peace and development? Yes it would, and in the near future Jesus is going to do just that.

Why does religion seem to be at the root of so many problems?
The fault lies, not with all religion, but with “false” religion.

False Religion...MEDDLES IN WAR AND POLITICS: How many religions can you think of whose members engage in war?

False Religion...SPREADS FALSE DOCTRINE: Most religions teach that the soul of spirit is some invisible part of a human that survives the death of the physical body. However, the Bible teaches a different doctrine. “The soul that is sinning, it itself will die.” Ezekiel 18:4 Jesus taught that the dead will be resurrected, an unnecessary action if humans had an immortal soul. Does your religion teach that the soul does not die?

False Religion...TOLERATES IMMORAL SEX: Church groups ordain gay and lesbian members of the clergy. What, though, does the Bible teach? It plainly states: “Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men.” 1 Cor. 6:9,10 Do you know of religions that condone immoral sex?

How to identify true religion.

True Religion...PRACTICES LOVE: True worshippers are “no part of the world,” are not divided by race or culture, and display “love among themselves.” Rather than killing one another, they are willing to die for one another.

True Religion...TRUSTS GOD'S WORD: Instead of teaching “tradition” and “commands of men as doctrines,” true religion bases its doctrine on God's Word, the Bible

True Religion...STRENGTHENS FAMILIES AND UPHOLDS HISH MORAL STANDARDS: True religion trains husbands to “love their wives as their own bodies,” helps wives to develop “deep respect for their husbands,” and teaches children to “be obedient to their parents.”

How would you wipe it out?

Unless you make some basic change in all human minds (which I think would be making the cure worse than the disease), it would just pop up again with another name, like, say, 'science'...

Hey!

I think that already happened!!!
