Don't make him chose between you and the cats!
I have asthma and allergies and we have two cats. It can be done. Just let him know he has to do all the cleaning and take the extra time to brush them. The saliva is the most dangerous part yet hardest thing to avoid (they lick themselves and you and him). See an allergist if OTC drugs don't work.

Either always use allergy meds or get a BF without cats.

Don't pet the cats that much and if you do wash your hands afterwards that way the dander is off you. because the dander is whats bad. Don't let them lick you either if you do wash up afterwards. Also you will want to take an allergy pill.

try taking antihistamines .. a friend of mine had the same problem and took antihistamines to help so was ok with pets
