he could be coughing for real or he could be copying you. We had one that had the whole thing down including the sniffles. I would call you avian vet and talk to them, does the bird have any other symptoms. hows his droppings look. if normal and he's eating he is probably copying you. but i would get him checked out. As with any bird by the time they show symptoms of being sick its usually too late to help them.

African greys are very good mimics and do tend to copy you alot. Like others have said you will know the difference between the birds cough and a mimic one.
However if you are going to take your parrot to a vet then please make sure that it is an avian vet. most vets do not know enough about exotic birds and can end up doing more harm than good, as my sister in law found out with hers. To find a vet in your area then go to the site below

I'll take this seriously, because a respiratory infection in a grey can be deadly.
If the parrot is lethargic, if the eyelids are droopy and eyes watery, or if the parrot is not eating, preening, or acting normally, he may have an infection. I do not think coughing is a sign of infections, but the others are. If so, get it to a vet quickly - respiratory infections can be very bad.
On the other hand, if it looks like it's having the time of it's life coughing, it's probably just imitating you and playing.

Like everyone else I wonder if he's coughing or mimmicking your cough. Maybe you should quit smoking.....lololol Just kidding, if he has a runny nose or sneezes and produces mucous (snot) then he has a respiratory infection and needs attention now. Birds dont handle infections well at all. I think its best to monitor him or perhaps approach him and start coughing and see if he mimmicks you. Good luck, hope all works out well for your parrot friend. God love em but African grays are the best birds on the planet.

You need to find a new home for it. It's not ill, it's depressed. My aunts african grey has the same exact problem to the T. When I was living with her, Ohannah would get off of her cage and follow me around while I cleaned and I would hold her on my shoulder, she loved me, after I left she started plucking her feathers, stoped talking, didn't really want much to do with anyone, I would go over there to see her and she'd start talking and want to get on me. It sounds to me like you need to rehome your african grey, as hard as that may be, it the best thing to do. Thats what any exotics vet or bird expert is going to tell you. I would take it for you but you probably don't live in Akron, Ohio. I can can give you a bird experts number if you would like, you can call her and she can try and help you, she specializes in plucking behaviors but more then likely your probably going to need to rehome you bird.

We have a blue and gold macaw and two African greys, When either of us cough they all start, it sounds like a doctors surgery.
Some time ago we had to call the alarm guy in because it kept bleeping, after about half hour, when we were all quiet it started!!!lucky we didn't have to pay, he put it down to a fault.
Don't worry, but don't have wind to often, it's catching.

My grey cough/chokes/sputters like she's really sick, but she's not sick, just mimicking. My friends grey does the same thing. If you're not sure, it's best to have an avian vet check her out. Birds can hide illness until it's too late.

I don't have a grey but my conure will hack, cough and sneeze mocking me. I can normally tell when he is real because it is not the same as mine. If your bird is coughing for real you should hear a sneeze from time to time and it should be wet.
I am willing to bet you have a mocking bird... lol..

that's quite funny- does he do it quite often? Copying you i mean? Then you know the answer if you're coughing and he has a habit of doing the same then it's just copying. If you're not then surely you should take him to the vet or whoever checks birds out soon!
