Maybe they don't take the time to understand. And they are not under obligation to understand. On the other hand, many people DO understand mental illness. All people are different and have different interests.
Does everyone understand baseball? No. Rocket science? No. Computers? No. Women? NO WAY.
I understand some things about mental illness, because I have been diagnosed with depression. There are other things I don't understand that much, like autism. While autism is a dread condition, especially in kids, I'll be perfectly honest by saying that I am not interested in learning about it. Does that make me a bad person? No. But I'm sure many autism activists would say I am uncaring. O well, that's their problem.
I, for one, am not going to expect that everyone understand my illness, nor will I judge them for not understanding it. If more people understood my illness, that wouldn't help me at all. I am responsible for my recovery.
Love Jack

Unfortunately when something cannot be seen such as the mind it is hard for people to understand. Also there is a lot less info available on mental illness than physical.
Mental illness affects our behaviour and moods. This is often frustrating to ourloved ones and those who do not know us get freaked out by it.

They don't take the time to educate themselves. Some people are mentally ill and are in denial. They refuse to seek help in fear of being judged or are just a shame. If you are always flying off the handle knocking people upside the head or just believe everybody is against you 9 times out of 10 you have some sort of mental illness It could be as simple as depression or as big as a mal function in your brain, bipolar, dementia to name a few. They have therapy and medication to help you get a grip on your behavior you and the people around you can live a better life.Seek help for yourselves and your love ones mental illness is controllable

Because unless they have experienced it, some people just don't think it's real. They have a difficult time understanding something they can't see with their own eyes. Physical ailments have symptoms you can see, unlike what goes on in your mind. Plus it scares some people.

I don't think it is so much not understanding, as it is that we're all sick of hearing about it.
These days, everyone seems to be getting diagnosed with some form of mental illness or another. People are simply using them as excuses anymore.

People do not understand mental illnesses because they are ancestrally afraid of being "contamined" by disease or unease.

as speaking about sex used to be, it gets hidden in the attempt that somehow it will go away-now there's a syndrome for everything-and the stigma or stereotyping goes on and on...
