It is imperfect faith and an incomplete understanding of God that causes people to choose their own will over God's.
If people understood that God's will is the only will that matters...well, not many do, hence the struggle. God's will is perfect and beautiful, and yet so many oppose it...why? It is because they do not have faith that God's will is perfect, and also that they don't understand God and his will that well.
Because when you know God, nothing else suffices. No dim approximations are acceptable. And self-will is included in dim approximations. If people allowed God's will to work in their lives, they would come to stand in awe of it, and come to know that anything they could have done instead would have been meager.
God provides that which we don't even know we're seeking when we are seeking and carrying out his will. That is, when I seek the unknown--God's will--and am content to put whatever side agendas I used to have entirely aside, God gives me gifts of such magnitude that I am astonished by them. They are so massive and ineffable that I would never have thought to ask God for them--since they were beyond my comprehension until they were given to me.
God is good like that.

Thats the problem though...people serve a religion and not God. Religions are constantly competing to win us but yet they are only losing our respect by trying to force us. The bible is a great learning tool. Thats all it is to me. Anyone can say that God told them to do and say anything, but only WE can decide whats in our hearts. Not other people.

the only way you can know what "god's way" of doing so, is by listening to God, and the result will almost certainly be a combination of beliefs from various viewpoints.

there's no way to know what exactly God wants you to do. just live your life the way YOU think a good christian should live it. conforming to the way everybody else in your religion acts isn't what God wants you to do, He wants you to think for yourself and believe in Him because you want to, otherwise you're just being a robot.

The problem is that nobody knows what "his way" is...that is why there are so many different religions. Everyone is taking a guess at it.

we have free wills.... but it is an will that has been compromized because human nature is tinged with evil and fallen
so ..yes its free... but limited because the natural desires are opposed to God
grace changes it

What do you believe? You have free will. how do YOU know GOD wants you to worship him. Maybe he only wants YOU to excell? Where is it obvious.
If I examine the Tassaday tribe in South Amenica they don't understand our God.
But you should do as YOU believe.
