My broiler is at the bottom of the oven and therefore the broiler flame will almost be touching the steak. Also, should I cook it in the broiler or the oven and for how long. for both ways?

I also want the steak to be medium well.

Hell no! Use a Black iron skillet. I just answered "Blossoms" question. Please, go look at it. Otherwise, your steak stands a good chance of seaming like you steamed it or you will over do it!

Cooking it in the broiler portion of a gas oven is one of the best ways to cook steak, in my opinion. You can do it medium-well, but it may take some experimentation. If the stak is a strip cut, 4-5 minutes per side should be good. The flame should come from the top, and since heat rises, don't be too concerned about the steak being close to the flame. Just keep an eye on the steak the first couple of times, until you get used to your stove.

What we do is cook the steak in the oven(top part) to cook it, then put in the broiler, to sear the outsides. As far as time to cook it, I do not know, cause the oven we use is very old, and the settings arent right. I keep taking the steak out and cutting a corner off, to see how well done it is.

I always cook my steak on the top rack on 300 degrees and watch it very carefully to make sure it dosnt over cook. And I like my steak very savory so I salt it often but not to over do it and also take a knife and slice the steak to see when its done and when it just stops bleeding its done or it will toughen up and be hard to chew!

Use a skillet on the stove. It won't matter since you're overcooking it anyway.
