I am going to college in Louisiana right now, and in 2 years I want 2 transfer to a college in NYC. Could someone please suggest decent areas places where rent is not so expensive. I know the least expensive apt. u can find is at least 1,000. However, I want to stay either in the city or 30 to 40 min out of the city. My main concern is having easy access to the city w/o having to pay so much! Keep in mind I am a college student , and money is pretty scarce. BTW my major is hospitality management and tourism and I plan on obtaining my bachelor's degree in this area. Any suggestion would be extremely helpful. Thanx!

try the east Bronx (good, safe italian/irish neighborhood; last I knew it was somewhat overlooked by the trendies), about 40-60 minutes to midtown by subway (runs 24 hours/day, although lnot too frequent in the wee hours) (less time by commuter bus; more limited hours).

the further out you get by commuter rail, the less frequent the train service. I don't know of any real bargains anymore in the closer burbs; Poughkeepsie (70 miles out) would met your price range, but it's 2 hours by Metro-North or 1 hour by Amtrak.

The best course would be to find roomies; then the closer burbs may become affordable.

Unfortunately there really is nowhere that is inexpensive and safe.We (my wife and I) live in a very small house in NJ and are paying 1400 a month. they do have houses for under 1000 but they are either in dangerous neighborhoods,or the houses are small and not well maintained. i live right off of one of the highways about 30 min.from NYC in Oakland. there are a few houses here for rent ,but as i said they are small and some not well maintained. the closer to NYC you are the higher the rent is.
you may also be able to find someone that rents rooms with kitchen privileges to college students. My shop supervisor does this,i think he charges around 1500 a month. He charges that much because it is basically an entire upstarts apartment . your own living room, kitchen, bathroom and laundry room. There are houses though that just rent you a room with privileges to the kitchen and such.

good luck in your search, and your education.

That all depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for fun, young, trendy, and really cheap clothes that are of poor quality, but who cares, cause you'll only wear them for a year or so, then I'd check out Mystique Boutique (on bway b/w prince and spring) or Forever 21 (union square). For somewhat higher-end clothes but still young and fun and of better quality, but not crazy expensive, I like Pookie & Sebastian (they have several locations). Of course, there's always Zara and H&M which are also pretty inexpensive, but are not unique to NYC. Also, on 3rd avenue around 30th-34th street, there are a few boutiques that are mid price range. Again, this is all young clothing for people in their 20's and 30's. And then, I always like Banana Republic, but I know you can get that anywhere.

All the places with decent commutes to NYC, and are safe are VERY EXPENSIVE !

Don't even think about driving into Manhattan.
For a place to live, try Craig's List.

Sorry, you're out of your mind if you think you can get an apartment for $1,000. Keep going higher... and get a good job 'cause you'll need it. Rents are much higher than that!
