Since he will not return your calls, you are left no choice but to visit his office and demand all of your papers back. Fire him on the spot and find a new CPA pronto. If he tries to bill you, you have an excellent small claims case against him. If this seems a bit rash to you, perhaps you can leave him the message that you want your paperwork back within the week so you can take it elsewhere. This may be enough to get him off his backside and finish the job by week's end (or at least to call you back).

Anthony, send him a certified letter, with return receipt. State clearly that he has had your information for over 7 months and that you must get all your records back immediately. Give him a clear timeline (say 2-5 business days) and tell him you will be by at a certain time on a certain day to pick up your stuff.

cc: (copy) your state's attorney general and/or the division that licenses accountants, you can probably go to your state website and search for the information. While at that website, check to see if you can verify his license.

Accountants are like everyone else, some are great, some suck and some run into mental health issues and screw you over.

Copying the state agency should get his *ss in gear. Good luck

Gem is pretty much right on. In addition you will want to contact the Certified Public Accountant's association in your state (in NC its the NCACPA). They will at the least put him on some pretty strict probation and depending on his track record, they could revoke his license to practice as a CPA. CPA's are governed by some of the strictest guidelines and your state association won't tolerate this kind of action (or should I say inaction) by your accountant. Since it is in the pm on Oct. 14th, I hope you have gotten some kind of resolution to this. I'm sure you know your taxes have to be in the mail by Monday. The good news is that as long as you have paid in all your taxes you won't get hit with any penalties or interest if you are forced to file late. Good luck with this.

Sounds like the CPA I used to use. The best move I ever made was finding a new Accountant. Good Luck!

I'm from Canada so not to sure of you laws. Best make sure you don't owe him anything that would slow anything down, then report him to the before mentioned.
