Everybody claims the title 'Christian" though poles apart in beliefs and practices. an impartial outsider would say thare is no Christianity. It is several different religions holding on to one Title. Look at the differenced between Unitarians, 7th Day adventists, orthodox (again in many denominations), Protestants(many denominations), Catholics--Eastern and Roman. Conversely, In Islam there are sects But they all have one set of Fundamentals, One Quran, One Prophet, One Central mosque in Makkah, allowing Intermarriages as legal . An impartial outsider
often wonders: Who to be accepted as Christian for sure.

Personally, I'm not protestant, but Protestantism is a form of Christianity, in case you didn't know. >_> Ignorance bugs me.
Also, they don't fear Catholicism or Islam. They just don't agree with the beliefs. They have their own thoughts.
P.S. I have no idea where you got your stereotypes, no Protestant that I've ever met is afraid of Catholics or Muslims.

1- Many protestants, especially my fellow evangelicals, aren't actually familiar with the term protestant or they don't know what it means. It probably sounds very formal or traditional to them, and many nowadays are getting sick of church tradition, and want change into doing things Biblically instead of traditionally. Add to this that many are getting tired of denominational bickering, which is the reason we often prefer to be called simply Christians.

2- I don't fear Catholicism or Islam. I dissagree with them strongly, but I'm not afraid of them.

Some people don't know what a Protestant is, claiming to be a Christian is something everyone can understand. Would you know what I was talking about if I said I'm an Calvinist Presbyterian attending the F.A.M.E. of S.F.? Probably not. But you'd understand "Christian", even if you had some misconceptions about what that really means.
