Canon is a great brand. But even with Canon you have 20+ models to choose from. You'll have to add some more information for a specific recommendation. Your budget, for example.

Additional Details.
Okay, round 2: are you looing for a convenient camera that you can carry in your jeans pocket, or a larger point & shoot, do-everything camera with 10x zoom, or a digital SLR for the best in performance and image quality? What do you want to use the camera for?

Yes, I'd recommend getting a Canon for your first(?) digital camera, especially their Powershot A series which are relatively cheap, but come with a lot of value. These digicams can be operated by a newbie (by using the Automatic settings) and get very good quality pictures. On the other hand, more experienced users will be amazed that they can also modify settings to fine tune their pictures.

You can browse Amazon.com to not only to see the camera's specifications, but also read the comprehensive reviews by people who've actually bought the camera.

Personally, I'd recommend either the Canon Powershot A540, A610, A530 or A520. Good features to consider are MP size (if you'd like to crop pictures then get the higher MP), optical zoom (higher is better), size of LCD display (bigger is better, but tends to consume more power) and type of batteries used, among others (AAs are my pick, since you can simply buy some at almost any store especially during emergencies; I do recommend that you also get rechargable AA batteries with a high capacity such as 2000+ mAh which will generally last you longer than your average alkaline batteries).

Good luck on choosing your camera!

I have a Canon Sure Shot z155 it is a 35mm-75mm lens camera...it is small but don't let it fool you. at the push of a button the lens gets long and woah. It takes awesome pictures. I got it for my ski trip to Colorado. The mountain seens were awesome!!! It cost around $200+ at Wal-mart....but well worth it.
mine was a gift. Go to to the site below to see a picture or just type in canon sureshot Z155 and it will bring it up and you can go right to the picture. I love my little camera.

Hey, hey, hey! I like Nikon. Haha!

OMG is right, so choose him as best answer. We need some more specific information to really help you. I have a generic answer, but I think even that would be misinforming you with so little information to start.

And simple brand preference is not a good place to start, either. I really favor Canon for certain cameras, but have a bias for Nikon for others.
