So, from what you're saying you do like him as well. I've been debating the whole dating a friend subject for a while, and here's some of the things I've come up with.
One, if you're straight forward with the person, you can still end things as friends if the relationship goes sour. It's a matter of identifying when things start going sour. Don't let it go to the point where you end up hating each other.
Two, make sure you're both in the same place and that you both want the same things. Otherwise, once you get emotionally invested, you may run into issues.
So is it worth taking the chance to date a friend, sure, why have the regrets of not trying something that can turn into something special. Just keep in mind that if it doesn't work out, you still want to remain friends.
In regards to your agreement with your closest friend, I normally have the policy of "bros before hos", and would not lose a friendship with a friend over a girl. Defiantly not worth it. Relationships come and go, your friends will always have your back.
If you really want to pursue something with this guy, you need to talk to your friend first, and make sure that it's all good. If they are a friend, then they would understand. Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up for some drama.

hmmm tough call. If you didn't have the agreement with the other friend I would say "Go for it! Tell him! The best relationships are also friendships!", BUT, if your other friend likes him, and you have an agreement...I think maybe you should talk to her and just be honest with her that this was totally unexpected and you don't want to destroy your friendship with her, but you are interested. Don't just all of a sudden say "Oh, by the way, I'm going out with him now...", you need to talk to her and be upfront with her.
Good luck!

The best relationships are ones in which the lovers were friends at the very beginning. So, I'd give him a try.

Talk to your friend, but she's got to realize there's more than one fish in the sea...he's stated an interest in you, if you are interested too your friend needs to be a friend and step back. If she doesn't, she's just jealous, and do you really need a friend who doesn't want you to be happy?
