I bought a flash drive and love having it. Mine is a SanDisk and it amazes me how much can fit onto such a small space. If you've never seen one, check this site for Sandisk:
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(1013)-USB_Flash_Drives.aspx

Other people will advise a different type, since many companies make them. SanDisk is just the one I happen to have.

When you use your Windows Explorer (not the internet one) to move a file from your hard drive to the flash drive, it automatically copies, rather than actually moving it. It works the same if you try to move a file to a cd or a floppy disk. You should be able to see a plus sign when you try to move the file.

This comes from my Help and Support section on the Start Button, search term was moving files.
To open Windows Explorer, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
If you drag an item while pressing the right mouse button, you can move, copy, or create a shortcut to the file in its new location.
To copy the item instead of moving it, press and hold down CTRL while dragging.
If you drag an item to another disk, it is copied, not moved. To move the item, press and hold down SHIFT while dragging.
Dragging a program to a new location creates a shortcut to that program. To move a program, right-click and then drag the program to the new location. You must be logged on as an administrator to move a program.

a network, if both machines are running windows xp the better
u will need a crossover cable if just 2 machines are being used.
u can get a crossover cable from most good comptuer shops, connect the cable at both ends restart al the machines, goto network connections and run the network setup wizard, then right click on a folder choose properties and choose sharing on
then u will be able to access this folder on the other machine just copy and paste, or if the machines have cdrw/dvd writer drives copy the files to cd.

I always use USB external harddrives...theyre fast, easy to use, and reuseable. You can move (or store) data up to the size of the drive.... thumb drives are ok, but they cant hold gigabytes of data.To use , just hook thru USB jack, this will create another drive on your PC just like your harddrive, and then drop and drag into it, or copy/ paste. Then unhook, and attach to the other PC, and drag your files in...thays it!
