Thursday morning at the dentist, I couldn't pin point the exact tooth that hurt so he settled on the one with the cap and said he'd do a root canal in 4 to 6 weeks. He couldn't see anything on the X-Ray. In the mean time I'm taking amoxicillin and 800 mg ibuprofen. At noon I took two amoxicillin and my teeth didn't hurt too much, but still hurt some. But the next morning one specific tooth began to ache horribly! And it's not the one he chose; it's the one in front of it! I called back the office to ask when the pain will stop and whether I should come back. She said three days, and I come back next Friday. I can't stand the pain. I have to watch my son and I get so angry. I've never had anything like this happen in 34 years, never pain like this that wouldn't stop with medication. I've been putting ice. I don't know how I can trust the dentist if he was going to root canal one tooth and now it's clearly another? Last night I had trouble sleeping because of it. Do I need percocet?

It takes 4-6 weeks for medi-cal to approve the procedure. I wish I'd signed up on my wife's dental insurance, but it's too late now. I'm going to ask if I can pay cash now and get reimbursed later? Somehow I think they'll still say no. We have money, I just don't have a job for various reasons, so I got medi-cal.

There's no pain by the fact of hot or cold, or air, only after eating, despite not chewing on that side, and brushing immediately afterwards. Benzocaine 10% has no effect.

First off, i wouldnt exactly trust your dentist either after hearing this story..sorry, but true!

If an x'ray was taken... he would have seen infection. If he said nothing was wrong, then why the antibotic? You dont give antibotics for nothing! So i'm wondering what he saw and he didnt tell you! Hmmmm...

Another thing, sometimes it is VERY HARD for us to pinpoint where the pain is coming from, if you the patient dont even know! There is a thing called 'referred pain'.. in which it feels like one tooth, when infact it's another tooth. All we can do is take x'rays. If we see something, we tell you and try to fix it. If we dont, then either a) we can either play the guessing game or b) wait it out, till the patient can tell us more. Yes the patient leaves sometimes still in pain.. but if we DONT know and cant see which tooth it is.. what can we do, seriously?

Also... if you think you KNOW exactly which tooth it is... simple, go back and tell them. Dont phone them, they most likely wont see you. But if you go in, they shouldnt turn you away.

**Now, if your having trouble sleeping because of this tooth... ROOT CANAL..!! Sorry to say, YES it needs one. And NO.. dont wait 4-6 weeks without getting it done. Thats insane!! I'd really question your dentist. He doesnt sound very professional to me!

You should call an Endodontics Specialist. Dentists specializing in this field are called endodontists and complete an additional 2-3 years of training following dental school. If you haven't already contacted one.
I had a root canal done a couple months ago, and then the pain came back and was horrifying. I ended up having to do another procredute called an apicoectomy, and my tooth feels much better. Although it hurt i didn't take any painkillers. I took advil and also used cold presses. Try avoiding chewy and hard foods or eatting on that side.
Also, Sometimes a tooth can be beyond a root canal, make sure you find out before you spend money on a root canal. Hope it gets better!!

Make sure you are taking the medication correctly. Distinguish which one is the antibiotic and wich Is the pain medicine. As for your visit with the dentist, you really can not blame him. You may have several teeth in the area he evaluated that need treamtnet. He can not determine which one it is if more than one needs work. If you were not sure of wich tooth hurt, all he could do was see which tooth was worse. When you do go back let him know you may think or you are sure it is another tooth instead.

The amoxicillin is an anti-biotic, NOT for pain but for infection. You must take it per direction ( do not pop randomly ) or else it will not be effective. I does not sound like you were communicating with the doc well. It is tough to communicate when you are in severe pain but you must try if you want a good outcome. The docs are not magicians and Xrays don't show everything.
